Natural Renegade: Opus Collection

Natural Renegade: Opus Collection

by Willie Nelson

Starbucks Entertainment's Opus series gets a fine Willie Nelson volume in this 16-track collection that encompasses many of the singer and songwriter's greatest hits -- though certainly not all. Two of these songs -- notably "Crazy" and "Funny How Time Slips Away" -- date back to his Liberty days in the early '60s, but the rest of these are from his long tenure with Sony-associated labels. This is a fine playlist with a pair of duets -- the ubiquitous "Mammas Don't Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Cowboys" with Waylon Jennings and the hit version of Townes Van Zandt's "Pancho and Lefty" with Merle Haggard -- balancing country, pop, and standards (some penned by the singer himself) that served to make Nelson not only a superstar in the 1970s, but a bona fide American musical legend. While some fans might argue at the inclusion of some tunes over others, that's inevitable with an artist whose catalog is as large as his. Simply put, this is a fine playlist on which there are no weak selections.
