When Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain was first published in 1979, it hit the New York Times bestseller list within two weeks and stayed there for more than a year. In 1989, when Dr. Betty Edwards revised the book, it went straight to the Times list again. Now Dr. Edwards celebrates the twentieth anniversary of her classic book with a second revised edition.

Over the last decade, Dr. Edwards has refined her material through teaching hundreds of workshops and seminars. Truly The New Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain, this edition includes:

  • the very latest developments in brain research
  • new material on using drawing techniques in the corporate world and in education
  • instruction on self-expression through drawing
  • an updated section on using color
  • detailed information on using the five basic skills of drawing for problem solving

Translated into thirteen languages, Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain is the world's most widely used drawing-instruction guide. People from just about every walk of life—artists, students, corporate executives, architects, real estate agents, designers, engineers—have applied its revolutionary approach to problem solving. The Los Angeles Times said it best: Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain is "not only a book about drawing, it is a book about living. This brilliant approach to the teaching of drawing . . . should not be dismissed as a mere text. It emancipates."

Have you ever wanted to go to Art School or at least take lessons, but couldn't afford it? Well, through this book you can become a 'invisible' student in the classroom of a compassionate teacher. Each chapter will be like another 'free' lesson you can acquire. Betty Edwards through this book makes you feel like all your questions are answered so you can understand them. She shares with you knowledge of many years as a art lover, art student, and teacher.Just for the price of your time to read this book!!! You shall recieve a 'hidden' bonus at the end of this book for you will, hopefully start to 'believe' in yourself. So if you really want to find out how to improve you creativity and find new knowledge about yourself. Then maybe you should ask yourself 'Am I worth it?'

I bought this book wanting to get back into drawing after so many attempts at failing. I bought both this book and the workbook. I have had this book for a week and already i am seeing drastic improvements in my drawing. It took me from being so unconfident in my work i didnt want to draw at all, to now showing it to all of my friends. It explains everything very well and it is so easy to understand. Even if you have never drawn anything in your life. This book boosts your confidence with just the first exercise! I recommend this to anyone who wants to draw. I was going to take a summer drawing class costing $125, and since ive bought this book i have no need for the class, so i just saved a ton of money!

This book singlehandedly gave me the foundation for the confidence to draw, and draw well within a month. The excercises are easy to follow, and the author has provided the psychological tools to help anyone draw with confidence. From the time I began reading to the time I finished the last excercise the results were astounding. I'd highly recommend it for anyone interested in drawing to use this book.

This is about drawing as a mind-expanding exercise, as a means of exercising your ability to see the world in new ways. Edwards has found that the adroit use of certain tricks can help people learn to switch their modes of perception at will.

I did some research and found out this book was rated very high and now I know why. I have taken one art class with a really great teacher, who I learned so much from and she used this book as the text for the class. Very good book...5 stars from me!

I'm 40 years old. A few weeks ago I could not draw to save my life. Then this book came and changed all that. I'm only half way through it and I am totally confounded by what this book has taught me. It has brought joy into my life that I simply thought was not possible. It is like I was blind and now I can see. If you think you cannot draw, this book will change your mind forever.

I bought this book to help out my students who are new to art and drawing classes. Many of them believe that you have to be "talented" to draw and using the examples in this book helped me to show them just how well everyone can draw, with just a little bit of help ... and relaxing their expectations, too, of course! :) Great book. Thanx for making it so much fun to teach drawing!

As a former stick-figure artist, I can honestly say that this book has changed the way I draw and think. With the help of its easy to follow instructions and helpful illistrations, I have improved miraculously. I would seriously recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn and/or improve their drawing skills. The book's readability makes it the perfect art instruction book for people of all ages.

At nearly 70 years old, I am learning more about drawing than I learned in three years of Art classes in high school. I recommend this book for anyone who wants to learn how to approach drawing.

I bought this book because of the reviews and I was not disappointed. I was drawing better than I ever had by the end of day one. People were complementing my drawings by the end of day five I finished the book in seven days and the results are amazing. Go to Barnes and Noble and look at the before after drawings on pages 19 and 20. They are not exaggerations I got similar results and in some cases my drawings were better. Keep in mind that those improvements came in just five days. People would tell me that all you need to do to get better at drawing is practice but after practicing and getting no results I was discouraged. First you need this book then all you need is practice.

I studied with Betty Edwards at Cal State Long Beach in the 1980s and it was an amazing class. We all went from drawing small and timidly to large and confidently, in addition to learning how to tap into our innate creativity. I've been missing that creativity lately and wanted to buy her old book, but was overjoyed to find it's been updated. You cannot go wrong in buying this book.

This book is extremely well written. It is easy to follow and understand. In just a couple of days I have seen a drastic improvement in my own drawing. I have attempted to draw things I never would have even tried befreo and been very suitably impressed.

Great book for the beginner. It explains things that experienced artists do naturally. However, the first couple of chapters are a bit repetitive and I skimmed through the dribbled repeated parts.
