Overview

Considering the long and tortuous legal wrangling behind this retrospective collection from grunge kings Nirvana, its very existence is something of a miracle. But even more extraordinary is the unblemished way in which the assembled tunes have aged, a testament to the late Kurt Cobain's soulful songwriting and the band's earnest, unaffected performances, traits that set them apart from the legions of grunge-styled bands following in their wake. That's probably most clear in the writhing, pounding grooves of the much-discussed "You Know You're Right" -- an "important" song because it's the last complete tune to be recorded by Nirvana, but a song that reaches undeniable greatness because of the undiluted passion Cobain poured into it. Beyond that stellar cut -- the disc's sole unreleased item -- Nirvana collects all the touchstones one would expect ("Smells like Teen Spirit," "Lithium," "Come as You Are") as well as nods to both the band's indie material and its later, more delicate side. The Sub Pop years are represented by the desperate-sounding "Sliver" and "About a Girl," while the fragility of Cobain's later compositions is showcased on "Heart Shaped Box" and "Pennyroyal Tea" (presented here in a version remixed by Scott Litt). Rounding out the set are live renditions of "All Apologies" and David Bowie's "The Man Who Sold the World." Beyond the essential "You Know You're Right," longtime fans won't find many surprises here, but as a representation of what Nirvana was all about, Nirvana is impossible to fault.

Nirvana is possibly the best band in history, and this collection of songs is a great lineup worthy of the title "best hits" however, courtney love has no right to mooch of the success of the husband she murdered. Kurt is spinning in his grave knowing that this demon temptress is profiting once again from his success, and the success of the others in his band. because of this, i give the album 3 stars because of the incredible talent and quality displayed in the album, and the evil tyranny which helped release it.

Nirvana: With this CD, I just reached. The songs on this are absolutely torturous to the soul as Cobain wanted them to be. I guess that's a tribute unto itself. "You Know You're Right" is one of the most wrenching songs, even if I didn't who wrote it or sung it. A great compiliation and finally Courtney Love let's us have a memory of Kurt in some way.

This album is great, except it is missing a lot of other great songs such as, sentless apprentice, dive and anuerysm,,polly, drain you, this isn't a total collection i would pay money for, i would wait for a better try at a nirvana greatest hits record, it should at least have some rarities and some live and loud stuff that would make it cool, if your not a nirvan addict and just like a few songs you heard on the radio, buy it, but if you really really like nirvana wait for a box set, that would come with more goodies.Nirvana is the puriest truest form of rock band since zeppelin hendrix, even, the beatles, in fact i like nirvana better than the beatles, the songs have heart and soul, unlike other bands who just focus on solos and chart topping records.one of the few bands that will really go down in music history.

This album is 100% quality music. It has all of Nirvana's hits and even includes a new track! Even though Kurt is dead, his music is still with us and his spirit lives on in his music. If you agree with me, well, You Know You're Right.

big fan of anything written by the greastest song writter of all time. may u rest in peace kurt. ur loss saddens us all. but their is so many better songs than the songs on this album. im sure u all think u nirvane fans but nirvana's greatest hits cd is bleach... then in utero. this cd comes in third maybe fourth. try this for a real greatest hits cd... blew, about a girl, school love buzz, negitive creep, MR. MOUSTACHE (my personal favourite), downer, serve the servents, heart shapped box, rape me, frances revenge..., dumb, milk it, radio friendly unit shiffter, tourette's, dive sliver, stain, been a son, polly (new wave), beeswax, hairyspray queen, and aneurysm. although many of these songs are not nirvana's popularest, this is real kurt at his best. anger and rage along with the greatest sounds. this cd should be titled nirvana raw.

The album does not quite fit all together i mean they could have just mad a single cd with just the new song but i guess they thought they would make more money if they put onl songs in it to i just think it would have been better to have just that song or more new songs beacuse it is kinda a waste to buy an album for one song. See i have every Nirvana cd and i did not feel like listening to the other songs cuz i already have them i just think they could have done better. But nirvana still ROCKS!

I decided to write this review because neither of the two people before me could write English very well. What can I say, it's a masterwork. For more unreleased tracks and things, keep your eyes out for next year's box set. This seems like a bit of an excuse to bide their time while putting together the real treasure. I'm a bit dismayed that they didn't add on more cuts from Incestiside, or even "Floyd the Barber" from Bleach. Oh well.

This album is absolutely incredible, I bought day 1, and every time I listen to the album, I am blown away by his powerful voice and the pain he weaves into his fantastic lyrics. This is a must have for Nirvana fans and plain rock fans all over the world.

I like to listen to many different types of music, i usually stayed away from "grudge" (i dont' like the catagorize music) but when i heard bits of this cd i bought heart-shaped box on itunes...nirvania is awesome.

I bought this c.d. right away, and I really love it! I loved the first track "You know your right" and have listened to it many times. As the biggest Kurt Cobain fan ever I was ecstatic about this c.d and track number 1 which I had never heard!!!!!!!!!!!!COBAIN LIVES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's simple as this, I am a Nirvana fan, these are Nirvana songs, then this is a great cd should follow suit. IT is, like other Nirvana fans, I am a bit disheartened that Maybe a song like 'Drain You' or 'Polly' or 'School' or so on and so forth, was ommitted, but thats just being cocky. For the longest time now though, in my lastest Musical escapade, I almost forgot about Nirvana. I started to get very pissed (the same way we gnr fans are still) that we'd hear news of a new album, and it never happened. Nirvana got dismissed by me as just teen angst, with no real musicianship to them, Not at least like the flourishing ones of the Sixties and Seventies you become obsessed with. But to my delight this year, Courtney allowed Christ and Dave to release This new song, which lets face it, its the only real reason Nirvana fans will buy it, and other people download. Theres so much more than just power chord bashing really going on that you kinda realize that, yea, it was real, but that its also just this art, and it should be appreciated. I love Nirvana, and I always will. Hell, ill even love Courtney because Kurt loved her.

This album is almost the perfect greatest hits collection. "You Know You're Right" actually gives you chills the first time you hear it, and it is still one of my favorite songs. Songs they shoud've included: "Pennyroyal Tea" unplugged, "All Apologies" Electric Version, "Where Did You Sleep Last Night", and "Anyerism".

nirvana was and always will be a wonderful and truly inspirational band...i think this compilation is very very good;however it is missing a few songs that i strongly feel should be on this album(i.e."polly","breed",and "radio friendly unit shifter") but that being said, overall it rocks. kurt may be dead but his music lives on forever.we miss you kurt :***( RIP

this cd is not the best of nirvana it is the pop version of what nirvana was but there is much more to nirvana than the album "nevermind" this is not what kurt would want in the cd that would be remembered as nirvanas best. kurt thought that tyhe 'nevermind' cd was a joke and a POP album... but I love nirvana and I will always be a great fan of them

It's a good collection for the casual Nirvana fan, but really not their best songs. It's a collection of the radio friendly tunes and the new track. I'd recommend buying their studio discs and the unplugged session before I would this, but if you're not willing to spend that kind of money this is a good buy.

back again...lol...im not gonna complain about the great songs that were left of the album, but to express both the bliss and agony that this album brings to the real Nirvana fans. the first "rock" song i ever heard was 'smells like teen spirit' and since that day i have been the biggest Nirvana fan on the face of the earth. i have never been happier than when i hear Kurt drive home the chorus of 'you know you're right', and i have never been so full of disappointment and pain when it ends, because this is the last "new" song anyone will ever hear from the greatest songwriter of all time. Rest In Peace, Kurt Donald Cobain, the world will miss you

the reason why i think this is a great cd is because im a great fan even though of the great lost of kurt cobain. im still a nirvana fan no matter what. the song that got me a fan was "smell like teen spirit". after that song i was a fan ever since.

This is best nirvana cd! It's got all my favorite songs. I listen to this cd almost everyday, all day! Kurt Cobain was a genius!

I really am dissapointed that Courtney wouldn't release his new song earlier! She needs to get off her high horse and let Nirvana be.Yeah I'm excited to read his journals but she shouldn't have put Kurts PERSONAL thaughts ect. to the public. I really hope that Frances doesn't end up like her mother. Otherwise I really am happy that this CD finally came out although I am dissapointed in such a non-creative title for it. I'd also like to know when the box set is going to be released, since there is much controversy. (i can't spell at all)

I still don't believe it, another awesome cd from one wicked band. I have to say I get a bit freaked out when I see the music video for You Know Your Right but that has nothing to do with this great band's new album. If you don't own this cd you're not a true fan of the greatest band ever. Nirvava rocks!!
