Nothing drives a family crazy faster than an old black fly on a hot summer day, especially when the family's a little crazy already. And this fly is as bad as they come. He knows every low-down trick in the book—and won't rest until he's gone through them all.

He ate on the crust

of the Apple pie.

He bothered the Baby

and made her cry.

Shoo fly!

Shoo fly!

Old black fly has been buzzin' around. He buzzes from A through Z. Wonderful fun book that children will want to read over and over. Colorful and funny. Shoo fly! Shoo Fly! Shoo!

Very good ABC book in my opinion. I would use it as a regular teaching tool. The art is fantastic in that it really keeps your attention without losing the primary focus of doing your ABC's. The book even has a simplistic story line to follow, which is difficult to find sometimes in conjunction with good art that doesn't detract from its purpose (at least in my experience).

A nice concept book. It starts with a poem that says that the old black fly is buzzing around and he has had a very busy day. It goes throughout the whole alphabet using rhyme and rhythm. It is the story of and old fly that does different things like for instance " He ate on the crust of the Apple pie, He crawled in the spills from the Olive oil can, He landed on her table, flap, flip, flap. ZZZZ ZZZZ ZZZ. I liked the fact that every couple of letters the author uses a motif to keep the interest of the reader. He says Shoo Fly! Shoo Fly! Shoo. The author ends the book with another poem saying that the old black fly's done buzzing around and he won't be bad no more.

I thought this was a really good book to read to your class if your trying to teach about music. You can sing the book to them and get them to echo different parts so they will stay intuned with the book. This book has amazing pictures as well which the children will love!

This book is a rhyme book about a fly who makes messes and causes distruction. The pages are very colorful, and the colors are beautiful. My daughter loves the rhyming, and read it along with me. She thought the story was funny because the fly made such a mess in the house.I would use this story in the classroom to teach rhymes. I would read the book, and ask the students to make their own rhymes.

we follow the an old black fly as he buzzes through the alphabet, -in verse no less--until he finally meets his end SPLATT!!Lots of repetition and a great refrain-- fun to read and fun to play - this is a great auditory read a loud. A big hit with the preschool crowd -- after they got over the initial shock of old black flies untimely demise-- they loved it. Steve Gammell's illustrations are, as always, bright and powerful.

An alphabet of annoyances by a busy buzzing fly. Gammell's brightly colored illustrations complete this great rhyming story.

This book is a great chance for children to experience repetition and rhyming. This little fly helps to teach children their alphabet in new and fun ways! It allows students to see how words flow in a sequence. It also uses the alphabet which enables children to see the order at which a letter comes in the alphabet.

I purchased this book to help alleviate a fear that my 3 year old daughter has of flies. She enjoyed this book and although she still has a little fear of flies, it is not nearly as bad as it had been. She will sit with me while I read the book to her and even touch the flies in the book. As it was difficult for me to find pre-school books relating specifically to flies, I would recommend this book to other parents. The story is enjoyable, easy to read.

I use thew book in my elementary music class and we sing the refrain to the tune of "Buffalo Gals" and add Orff instruments throughout the story. The kids love the story and the fact that it uses all the letters of the alphabet. And they love that the fly gets swatted at the end.

I have a 6 month old daughter. Often I go to the library to take out books. This helps me decide which ones will be good to purchase. She really likes this book and I have a tough time reading it without laughing. I would highly recommend it.
