Soon to be a major motion picture!

Winner of the Newbery Medal and a #1 New York Times bestseller

This stirring and unforgettable novel from renowned author Katherine Applegate celebrates the transformative power of unexpected friendships. Inspired by the true story of a captive gorilla known as Ivan, this novel is told from the point of view of Ivan himself.

Having spent 27 years behind the glass walls of his enclosure in a shopping mall, Ivan has grown accustomed to humans watching him. He hardly ever thinks about his life in the jungle. Instead, Ivan occupies himself with television, his friends Stella and Bob, and painting. But when he meets Ruby, a baby elephant taken from the wild, he is forced to see their home, and his art, through new eyes.

The One and Only Ivan was hailed as a best book of the year by Kirkus, School Library Journal, and Amazon, demonstrating it is a true classic in the making.

In the tradition of timeless stories like Charlotte's Web and Stuart Little, Katherine Applegate blends humor and poignancy to create Ivan's unforgettable first-person narration in a story of friendship, art, and hope. An author's note depicts the differences between the fictional story and true events.

Plus don't miss Katherine Applegate's Endling series!

This is a wonderful book. It is told from the viewpoint of Ivan, a silverback gorilla who is an artist. The language is beautiful. I read it to my 4th grade class and they LOVED it! The students wanted to learn more about poaching and how zoos work. I would HIGHLY recommend this book. Adults will love it also!

I bought this for my 4th grader, but started reading it myself to see if it was appropriate before I gave it to her. I found myself literally crying tears of joy upon reading the end of this story. Ivan is more humane than most humans, as Stella is more patient & wise. Bob is a scene-stealer with his painfully insightful comments about us humans. A wonderful story for all ages!

A must read for ages 9-90. I don't want to use too many words, you'll understand once you read the book. Get your box of crayons and tissue ready.

Loved, the book and touched me very deeply because I knew the real Ivan. Here are some details.  Ivan was born in 1962 in Africa and came here at 6 months. In 1994 he finally found a grand home at the zoo in Atlanta. Ivan lived there until last summer where he died at the ripe old age of fifty which is ancient for a gorilla. Most don't live past thirty-five.. Our entire community was deeply saddened by his passing. No one had ever forgotten him; he was special to us. His ashes have been returned to his home here and a memorial with a statue of him will stand in  beautiful local park where he will be remembered for many years to come. As I said, I grew up with Ivan and can fill in his story. He lived a big store called the B&I in Lakewood, WA for twenty-seven years.  Like most of the people who grew up during the Ivan years 1962 - 1994, I remember him vividly. I was a child in the 70's and didn't realize how alize how unfair it was to Ivan to have no other gorillas. I do remember not liking his cage. It had been state of the art in the 1960's but it didn't age well. Although we were ignorant at the time, Ivan was adored by all of us. To the owners of the store who bottle and spoon fed him as an infant, he was part of their family. Really, though, it felt like he was a part of all of us. As a kid, it was a BIG deal to see Ivan and anyone of us from that era have only fondness and love for him. As we aged nd scientific knowledge of gorillas grew,  we knew it was wrong & cruel to keep him behind glass in a concrete enclosure so we were overjoyed when Ivan found a home in the Atlanta zoo. He had a home where he could be outside in fresh air, interact with other gorrilas and be stimulated by his envioronment rather than caged.  There was also a wistfulness for him too. We missed Ivan immensly. Over the years we kept tabs on him, but the internet really gave us the ability to see pictures and his wonderful home. Ivan has a Facebook page where anyone can see him. Go check him out. You will see the tremendous happiness when the page appeared with many comments and memories. You'll also see the heartache at his passing. You will also see this book reference many, many times. We loved him. Go check him out!.

This book was spectacular, and, so far, the only book ever to quench my unsatiable hunger for new books for two whole days (with the exception of Pride and Prejudice). I cried through nearly the whole book and it was so sweet! The One and Only Ivan is a must-read book for EVERYONE. Personally, I am not an animal-lover and, when I found out this was an animal-centered book, was a bit skeptical, but I love it. It is an amazing read and everyone and anyone should read it. It ought to be on the required reading list of EVERY school in the nation and in the world. New favorite book!

The One and Only Ivan is a book about a gorilla named Ivan that lives in a mall called the exit 8 Big top mall. He also has not seen one of his kind in almost 3 decades. A gorilla who lost his family, he was being taken care of by the owner of the mall his name is Mack. Ivan is a calm gorilla not the mean type he is more like a human than a gorilla and does not miss his old life in the jungle. He manly thinks about his friends Stella who is his best friend to Ivan and made a promise to get ruby to a better place. Bob who is a stray dog that came to the mall and lives in Ivan’s cage and sleeps on Ivan’s belly and Julia who is the janitor’s daughter and taught Ivan how to paint and they paint almost every day. From my point of view, I think this book is a really good book. Especially the ending when Ivan does something really special for Ruby. There is not really anything I don’t like about the book, other than the parts like when Stella died. I really think other people should read this book. It is a very interesting book and it really gets exciting at the end of the book. Also the way Mack get angry at ruby and hits her with the claw stick and Ivan gets really mad and starts beating his chest and made the story more interesting to see what will happen at the end.

This is a great book for all ages. The book, “The One and Only Ivan,” involves the communication and feelings between characters that makes you feel very emotional. The events and actions of characters makes you feel such things as happy, sad, and mad. This story involves actions like protests, circus shows, and being taken away from the place they were for a new start. The story involves a gorilla named Ivan, living in decent conditions in a town mall, with other animals, trapped in a domain. The author makes a scene where a character is bringing back memories with Ivan, which makes you feel kind of sad for the character. The gorilla and the other animals soon find happiness in the story very soon. The author had also made another scene where a character is vicious to an animal, but then soon knocked down by the animal. The author creates scenes such as these to make us feel emotions for the characters. In conclusion, this is a great book for all ages, even children. Not only it is a simple book, but it makes you feel like you are really in the story. It shows that animals can sometimes communicate with humans, even if we don’t know it.

“The One and Only Ivan” written by Katherine Applegate is an amazing story. It’s about a gorilla named Ivan whom was kidnapped by humans and taken away from his family. The humans took him to Mack, a guy who owns a mall with animals in different glass cages. Mack takes care of Ivan until he gets older and bigger. After Ivan grew Mack put him in the mall in his own cage. Where he meets Stella a circus elephant. They become best friends because they only had each other as friends. Then Bob a stray dog that was thrown out comes and build a good relationship with the two and everything was okay. One day Mack comes in with a baby elephant her name was Ruby. Ivan was scared and afraid. Ivan was afraid that Ruby would grow up in the mall and alone without her family. Ivan knew he had to do something. He realized that they shouldn’t be there. He thought they should be somewhere else. Ivan never really thought about how he is not with his family. Until something changed and he saw things differently. This is inspirational, emotional, and influenced on a true story about friendship and faithfulness. I recommend you read this story! This book shows kindness in animals you didn’t know before. In this book you will find out that gorillas aren’t what you think they are. The story shows elephants aren’t the beast you know. Animals can’t be in a cage. They have to be free. This story shows all that emotion and that force. You will find out things you didn’t know before, read this and you will see for yourself.

I requested this book for review from LibraryThing because I was a big fan of the Animorphs series, penned by Applegate as K. A. Applegate, when I was young. I had never read anything other than these books by her before, so I didn’t really know what to expect. I did suspect, however, that I would like it. I was right. I am very glad that my receipt of the novel was only delayed and not cancelled, because it would have been a shame to miss this one. The One and Only Ivan is a wonderfully written, feel-good novel. It is a novel written from the perspective of a gorilla named Ivan. For years, he has been a feature of the Big Top Mall and Video Arcade. He has lived in his domain making quiet observations about the humans that come to stare at him through the glass panes. He doesn’t think about his old life in the jungle. That’s the key to living in his existence — his twin sister couldn’t let the jungle life go, and died as a result. There are no other gorillas at Exit 8. His only friends are an elephant named Stella and a skinny, stray dog named Bob. When a new elephant baby named Ruby is brought in to help salvage the business, Ivan is torn between his seeming inability to make any headway with the humans and fulfilling his promise to secure Ruby a better life. If there was ever any doubt that a children’s novel could make an adult tear up, The One and Only Ivan dispenses with this notion. I don’t even like monkeys, and am not particularly fond of gorillas either. But the talent of the author’s storytelling overrides my original biases. Applegate is so wonderful at writing from Ivan’s perspective — taking an outsider’s probable observations of humans and putting them to paper in a way that is simple, yet poignant and often funny, charming, and sometimes alarmingly resonant. The messages of this novel are much like that of a well-crafted Disney movie or something of the like that is widely held to be enjoyable by children and adults alike. The content is simple and whimsical enough for children to enjoy, but the lessons about humans and their differing treatment of animals is serious enough to give adults something to consider when they are done reading. I highly recommend this novel. Applegate has proven, once and again, that she is a talented author. Even if you don’t particularly like gorillas, don’t let that stop you. The One and Only Ivan is a novel that transcends the characters; it is a story of humanity and the thoughts and feelings of animals that we are often too quick to ignore. This book was obtained freely through the LibraryThing Early Reviewers program in exchange for an honest review.

I read this book for the Newbery Challenge.  It won the Newbery award in 2013.   When I first started it, I didn't know how I was ever going to get into it - as the dialogue was between Ivan, Stella and Bob - a gorilla, elephant and dog.  I thought it was going to be very childlike.  Well, I thought wrong.   It wasn't long before I was genuinely interested in the well-being of these three friends.  They cared about one another and were really more family than friends.  This family expands when a baby elephant is brought into this strange zoo-in-a-mall.  Her name is Ruby and Stella takes her under her wing.  Unfortunately Stella is old and her health is failing.  She teaches Ruby as much as she can before she passes.  Ivan does promise her that he will make sure that Ruby does not stay at the mall forever like they have.   With that promise on his mind and in his heart, he starts a campaign to try to get people to understand that they want to be outside with other animals like them.  He has been creating "art" that is sold at the mall for years, but now he starts to draw a bigger picture using many pieces of paper.  He hopes the young girl who always comes to visit him will be able to figure out what he is trying to say.   I really enjoyed reading this book, and found it even more interesting when I discovered it was loosely patterned after a real gorilla named Ivan.  This gorilla also lived at a mall for twenty seven years before the public outcry that sent him to live at Zoo Atlanta with other primates.  There are some great themes here regarding friendship, bravery and cruelty to animals.  And yes, it does deal with death, but I think it handles it in a way that young children can handle.

In the One and Only Ivan the story takes place in a mall where Ivan and other animals live in cages. Ivan a silverback is no longer interesting to people and causes Mack the owner to lose money. When a new animal comes in to earn more money Ivan has to try getting her out to a better place. He promises Stella a different animal that he will get the new animal out. Ivan then has to use his very small art skills to help get the new animal out. I gave this book 5 stars because I liked the characters and how an animal could be so smart. I liked how Ivan used his skills to get the new animal out. I never got bored because everything kept coming after another. I would recommend this book to everyone because it’s so good.

This beautifully written book has truly touched my soul. Told in animal voices, Applegate reveals their stunning everyday insights and offers an honest portrayal of their lives in captivity. It is easy to see why this wonderful book was awarded the 2013 Newbery Award. Highly recommend for grades 4 and up.

“The One and Only Ivan” is about a gorilla named Ivan who lost his family. Ever since then he was being taken care of by Mack who owns Big Top Mall. Eventually Ivan had got too big to be living with Mack. So he was a pet for big top mall for people to see. Ivan is calm he does not like to harm anybody. He has lots of feelings for not only himself. Ivan is more like a human then his own kind. He does not think about his old life or even remember it. All he does is sleep, watch television, and draw with Julia the janitor’s daughter. They are really close friends. Stella is another one of his friends who lives right beside him. He also has a stuffed animal named not tag named it after his sister. Then another elephant came along named Ruby. She was so young and she lost her family. She has changed Ivan because he knows how it feels to grow up not around his own kind, and to have lost his family. He cares to much about her and does not want her to live the same way he and Stella had. Ivan and Stella had difficult lives. They both lost family, was stuck in a small cage, and was used for show so that Mack could get money. So right before Stella had gone she had Ivan make a promise for her. That promise was to get Ruby out of there to a better place. In my opinion this book is great. It gets exciting and gives you different emotions, to see what is coming up next. Especially near the end.

The One and Only Ivan is a fiction story. The authors goal was to let people know it is good to help animal or family or friends etc. The story was told by a 1-person view. The person who wrote this very good book and her name is Katherine Applegate. I think it is really good book because I am a big animal and help out person. And if you’re a person like that then I think this book would be good for you. This book is about a sweet gorilla who has lived with humans most of his life. When Ivan the gorilla meets a baby elephant girl name Ruby. he promised his friend he would save and protect her. They all lived in a small domain in a mall/circus. More about Ivan and this is a big point of the story is about his art work. It may help him out though the story. My opinion is that it’s very lovable and an action kind of book. There are some sad moments. There are lots of twist and turns. I like it because of the plot and the problem that comes with it. But to me it was a great book. And if you are an animal lover or if you are a person how likes some action I highly suggest the One and Only Ivan book. To me it really achieves its purpose and I think you would think the same.

The One and Only Ivan is influenced on a real gorilla. It is a really good book that I think many people would enjoy. It is about a gorilla named Ivan and some of his friends. Ivan has been in the mall alone only with his two best friends Stella the elephant and Bob the dog. One day Ivan and Stella’s owner bring in new baby elephant named Ruby to come live in the mall with them. Stella begins to get attached to Ruby and starts to take care of Ruby as if she were her own. One day Stella goes away but before Stella leaves she asked Ivan to get Ruby out of the mall. Stella told Ivan that she wants Ivan to get her out of the mall because Stella doesn’t want Ruby to live in a cage forever without anyone of her kind like her and Ivan did. Stella leaves and Ivan gets attached to Ruby. Ruby and Ivan both become great friends. Ruby even helps Ivan remember his past. Ivan tries his best to keep his promise to Stella. I personally think that The One and Only Ivan is a really good book. I loved how the story began sad but ended happily. I think that this book is best for 6th,7th, and 8th graders mostly, because some parts of the book might be too sad for younger people.

I was an Elementary Public School Teacher and I read about Ivan quite awhile back.  My specialties were 1st, 3rd, 4th and 5th grade.   I am going to read it again and have my grand, great grandchildren and children read it to those too young to read. I, too, would recommend it  to ALL ages, as I am now almost 83.  READ IT, if you have a heart, you'll have to LOVE it. 'classicalall'

One and only Ivan is by Katherine Applegate. It is a fiction book, but is based on a real story. Ivan is a real gorilla, lives in the zoo Atlanta. Ivan spent three decades without seeing any of his own kind, he spent 27 years of his life in a cage. Ivan is the main charter in the book he also tells the story. When Ivan lived in the jungle his mom and dad gave him the name mud. They gave him this name because he painted with mud. Ivan also had lots of friends. Stella is Ivan’s best friend she was performing and the stool broke Stella was injured. Stella has never seen any of her own kind for a long time. bob is a stray dog he can only sleep on Ivan’s belly. Bob is a stray; he was thrown out into the street. Ever since that day he never wanted to have an owner ever again Ruby is the baby elephant. When she first came, Stella had to help get her out of the truck. Ruby was so scared. She also loved stories about elephants. Ivan told her a story every day. Ruby even helped Ivan recover his memories.

“The One and Only Ivan” is a great, loving story. If you love to read books about animals, then you would love this book. Ivan is a gorilla and Ruby is a baby elephant. The entire book is mainly based on them. They become best friends and Ivan makes a promise to Ruby. I feel that everyone should read this book. I had laughs and tears while I read this book. I wish everyone loved to read as much as I do so they could read this book. My favorite part about the book is how all the different kinds of animals get along and share their feelings with each other. Katherine Applegate is a wonderful author. She is very intelligent. I know if I see a book that is written by her I will definitely read it. She is an amazing writer. She deserves all the credit people give her. Katherine is smart and can catch the reader’s attention. She expresses her feelings about Ivan well in the book too. I hope she writes more stories about animals. I appreciate all the hard work and labor she put into this book to entertain people. This book will make your mind go on an adventure.

The One and Only Ivan is a good book for all ages. This is about a gorilla named Ivan. He lives in a mall in side his cage. It is at Big Top Mall off exit 8. He always liked his cage. That is until his best friend Stella was gone. They lived there together for 27 years. Ivan spent his whole life there… in a cage. Ivan is a very calm gorilla. But, one day he saw the keeper Mack hit the baby elephant Ruby with the claw stick. From that point on he refused to call his cage his domain like he has years before. Ivan loved to make art. Julia, the janitor Georges daughter, always gave Ivan crayons to draw. He made what looked like scribbles but it actually meant a lot. He hid all of his drawings under his little kiddy pool. The drawings were found in Ivan’s cage. Julia and George placed out all the drawings in the arena. After a while they got all of the drawings placed out. They couldn’t believe it. Once they were placed together they said “HOME”. After Stella was gone all Ivan wanted to do is get ruby out of that mall and keep his promise to Stella. Julia and George put up Ivan’s drawing on the bill board and soon after some very important people arrived. I liked the book very much even though I don’t like those kind of books there is just something about this one I love. This book is amazing. I think everyone will like the book. Whoever reads it will love it. This is a great book for all people who like animals, and it can be for all ages.
