Overview

Austin-based Kelly Willis has always combined organic rock 'n' roll energy with a tradition-steeped honky-tonk heart. Perhaps it's that free-spiritedness that doomed her attempt to work within the Nashville star-making system. Though it's generally acknowledged that Willis achieved her artistic and commercial breakthrough with her first post-Nashville effort What I Deserve, the best of her work in the mainstream country realm is still well worth a listen. This 14-song collection does a fine job of collecting the best of the three albums that Willis made for MCA's country division between 1990 and 1993. Highlights include the impassioned "Looking for Someone like You," the torchy "Baby Take a Piece of My Heart," the Tex-Mex-tinged "The Heart That Love Forgot," the Steve Earle/Robert Earl Keen-penned "Sincerely (Too Late to Turn Back Now)" and the exuberant, Marshall Crenshaw-penned album-closer, "Whatever Way the Wind Blows." Other points of interest include the breezy "Take It All Out On You," cowritten by the artist's first and second husbands, Mas Palermo and Bruce Robison, and a smoldering cover of X's "Little Honey," rescued from the Thelma and Louise film soundtrack.

Thank you Kelly for releasing this wonderful compilation of all your best. I love every song on this CD. Kelly's voice has spice. Compared to Patsy Cline but Kelly's voice is different...hard to describe beyond saying that it's infectious. Once you listen to one song, you want more! A lot of rockabilly, a little blues, a lot of heart and soul. This is by far her best CD. It got my toe to tapping, wishing I could sing well enough to sing along and not ruin the song altogether! This is one of my all time favorites now. I hope she keeps recording and putting out more music. Maybe with her husband Bruce as I saw their video recently on CMT and loved the song.
