Yeah, Take 6 are a gospel vocal group at heart, but their fusion of gospel with street corner doo wop, jazzy African rhythms, and -- on their recent albums -- sparse but refreshing and inventive instrumentation makes them something else again, until it hardly matters if the music is secular or sacred. Take 6 simply make joyous music, so joyous that things like genre cease to matter. One, issued by Shanachie Records, is Take 6 once again in wonderful, glorious flight, featuring gorgeous and perfectly layered call-and-response vocals and interjections on tracks like "Down Here I've Done My Best," "One," and "Noah," making this set yet another testament in the group's already impressive catalog.

OK, I must admit, I am biased! Take 6 are my favorite group. However, my sentiment is shared by many; after all, it was Quincy Jones who said Take 6 are "the best vocal group on the planet!". Other huge fans include Stevie Wonder (who is a guest on this album), the late Leonard Bernstein, Livingston Taylor, ...the list goes on and on. Take 6 have won ten Grammys, but this is their best effort yet! Even better, they have gone back to their roots, gospel music and spirituals. They have recaptured the brilliance that catapulted them to the top of the music world way back in 1987. "One" is guaranteed to take the music world by storm! Arrangers Mark Kibble, David Thomas, and Khristian Dentley have produced extremely addictive arrangements of older "Jubilee" type spirituals. Warning - you WILL find yourself addicted! The harmonies are still there, a little simplified compared with their previous efforts, but eminently listenable and singable. The vocals are silky smooth, the harmony deep and rich, the rhythms intoxicating! This is music that can, and will, be enjoyed by everybody. The CD has GREAT music from start to finish. There is not a single bad cut on the CD. My favorites though are "Glorious Day" (guaranteed to get you dancing and "In the Spirit"), Noah (what a brilliant arrangement), and the title track "One". The CD is almost entirely a cappella, and the group again shows why they are without equal in the genre of vocal harmony music. The singing is soulful, laden with emotion, with deeply spiritual lyrics that are guaranteed to take you into a better place. If you love gospel music (and even if you don't), it does not come better than this! Buy it! You will love it! I often complain that music is dead, that there is nothing original or exciting out there. On this album, Take 6 reinvents themselves, and in so doing bless the world with another truly exceptional album. If I could, I would give it six stars!
