Everyone will enjoy Painting with Bob Ross, as his “happy accidents” approach makes this challenging subject matter enjoyable for all ages, regardless of skill level and materials used.

“All you need is the desire to make beautiful things happen on canvas…” —Bob Ross

In 1982, The Joy of Painting  made its debut on public television. The unrehearsed, unedited show soon became a favorite among aspiring artists and painters. Almost 40 years and 403 episodes after his on-air debut, and decades after his untimely passing, Bob Ross still has enormous global popularity as a beloved painter, affable TV personality, and cultural icon.

With this guide, you can learn to paint a happy tree in seconds, just like Bob Ross! Painting with Bob Ross introduces you to the tools and materials you need to paint beautiful landscapes, as well as basic painting techniques, such as how to load your brush and how to paint with a knife.

Following the introduction are 16 painting projects, each with a complete list of tools and materials needed and instructions for preparing the canvas. Jump into painting with step one, then follow the full-color painting progressions and clearly written instructions until you’ve reached the final step—and your new, joyful work of art! This is the only Bob Ross book with all-color images.

Even if you’re brand new to painting, remember that Bob said, “Talent is nothing more than a pursued interest. All you need to paint is a few tools, a little instruction, and a vision in your mind.” Throughout this book, Bob’s quotes encourage you to keep going.

So grab your copy of Painting with Bob Ross, relax and unwind, and paint a Bob Ross-inspired landscape! You can paint graceful mountains, ocean waves crashing onto rocks, a winter cabin, a lakeside path, a deep forest river, and many more breathtaking views. And don’t forget to sign each of your masterpieces once you’ve completed the last step!

About the Author

You’ve seen him before. He’s the soft-spoken guy painting happy clouds, mountains, and trees in about 26 television minutes, using big house-painting-type brushes and cooing soothing “you can do its” to his audience. Bob Ross’ The Joy of Painting program is the most recognized, most watched TV art show in history. Millions of viewers of all ages and from around the globe still relax and unwind with Bob’s gentle manner and encouraging words, captivated by the magic that takes place on canvas.

Bob Ross was born in Daytona Beach, Florida, on October 29, 1942. He grew up in Orlando with his father, Jack, a carpenter, and his mother, Ollie, who had the largest influence on him. She taught him to love wildlife. “I think when I was a kid, I must have had every kind of pet imaginable,” Bob said. At 18, Bob joined the Air Force, and after a couple of years was transferred to Alaska. Having been born and raised in Florida, Bob Ross was 21 years old when he saw snow for the first time. And yet that breathtaking Alaskan scenery, and the sights of nature in the years following, would serve as his ultimate inspiration on canvas.

For more than 35 years, Bob Ross has transformed TV viewers into canvas champions. Folks who never thought to pick up a paintbrush before decided to paint because of Bob Ross. Bob was always proud of the fact that while art has traditionally been accessible to only a select few, his technique brings everyone to the table. “Talent is nothing more than a pursued interest,” he would often say. “All you need to paint is a few tools, a little instruction, and a vision in your mind.”

Quarto Publishing Group – Walter Foster Like thousands of other people, I LOVED watching Bob Ross create beautiful paintings on television, and every so often I will check out one of the episodes on YouTube just to get my "fix" of "happy little trees." I've always been intimidated by the idea of painting along with one of these video tutorials, but having a print version as an option gives me new hope. Starting out like many others, there is a tools and materials section.  It includes the paints and brushes Mr. Ross used, and the beloved palette knife! There's also the unique wet-on-wet method of painting he used, which I've always found particularly AWESOME! A handy material list is given for each individual project, so you won't get distracted wandering off looking for your tube of Titanium white.  There are quotes sprinkled throughout that I just couldn't help myself hearing them in his voice. Thank you to NetGalley for an electronic copy in exchange for an honest review. 5/5 stars

If you like painting landscapes, Bob Ross’s book, Learn To Paint In Oil Step By Step, is a great book to start with. For beginners, he starts by introducing the supplies you will need and does a good job specifying which brush to use and how to use it throughout the book. He also does a good job explaining the color theory. Many of his paintings are challenging for the more advanced as well. All of his paintings are landscapes. Some of them are more unique by painting a landscape through a window. There is a wide variety of landscapes including day, night, and different seasons. Of course, there are a few happy trees and happy accidents that happen along the way. I recommend this book to anyone interested in learning more about oil painting. I received this galley from NetGalley.

I have loved Bob Ross’ paintings and calming personality for years, so was excited to review this book. Apart from step by step instructions on how to paint several of Bob’s paintings, scattered throughout the book are some of the positive sayings he used in his tv show. I don’t know if there is a book of these available but if not there should be. The painting themselves are very typical Bob Ross, and if you are a fan of this style you will enjoy learning how to produce these yourself. This book could be used in conjunction with the appropriate episode of The Joy of Painting so that you can have everything you need ready beforehand, and to follow along and make sure you don’t miss anything. I have always wanted to try painting, and now can’t wait to get some Titanium White on a brush and give it a go.
