Overview

At first blush, this shy, introspective London-based quartet don't seem poised to be one of England's biggest sensations for 2K -- but they are. Parachutes, their first outing, entered the British charts at No. 1, ousting Eminem, and it vied for the prestigious Mercury Music Prize for Best British Album (losing to another hot debut, from Badly Drawn Boy). It's a little surprising that such a calm, albeit emotionally dense, album has caused such a stir. The young group's meditative rock often sounds like a cross between Travis, Jeff Buckley, and Bends-era Radiohead on mood stabilizers. But Coldplay never approach those bands' intensity or hysteria: Chris Martin's voice occasionally flips into a Buckely-esque falsetto, but his tone is always serene, and the tempos seldom step above a canter. On the first single, "Yellow," for example, over a slow drum beat and a shimmering mesh of acoustic and electric guitars, Martin's pleading vocals gently nudge the song forward to a dramatic, if restrained, conclusion. Although Parachutes isn't the sort of album to throw on at your next kegger, the songs have a melodic strength and quiet beauty that belies the group's youth and elevates Coldplay to "one to watch" status.

I bought this CD as soon as I heard the song ''Yellow'' on MTV2. The CD was so great that I had to see them live in Chicago last year when they came to tour in America. I can't wait until there next album. Pick this one up if you haven't already!

When I first heard the song Yellow I thought it was Dave Matthews Band (who I am not very fond of) because of the singers voice. I some how felt very attached to the song and knew I had to find out who it was. Every time I listen to it I pick out something new, it's amazing. I picked up the album and I love it even more. Even though most of their songs seem like desperate cries to plead their love, they are really songs that consider the hope of what could be. The lyrics and melodies are very memorable. My favorite song at the moment is... Trouble. I've never felt such emotion since U2's song, One. I just suggest picking up this CD, don't expect it to be good or bad, something will grow onto you from it.

The lyrics have the imagination and depth similar to bands like Oasis or Incubus but it's their sound that sets them apart. It's dreamy and eclectic and makes me think of what Radiohead might sound like if they were in love.

'Parachutes' is one of the best albums I've ever listened to, even though I'm mostly a heavy metal fan. The lead singer is extremely talented and he lends a very human, yet unusual touch to the very finely crafted songs. I would recommend this album to anyone who loves good music. It's just wonderful and I cannot say enough good stuff about it.

When I first heard the song ''Yellow'' I was just stunned. I had to go out and buy this CD right away! My far the prettiest, most uncynical and honest love song I've ever heard. The rest of the CD is also amazing - especially ''Shiver'' and ''Everything's Not Lost''. They sound a little like Radiohead or Travis, but they are very different, in my opinion. They set a different mood entirely. Mostly themes of unrequited love and hope. I'd say combine the Counting Crows and Dave Matthews Band and make them British, and you're close to what they sound like. I have the feeling this band is going to get very popular in the US.

Hey you all, ignore the comparisons with travis & radiohead & just go buy this album - form your own opinion...i was mesmerised when i heard yellow & seeing all the comparisons with travis i went & bought the album...my opinion? This is as far off from travis as you can get...travis is a great band but i have to say they dont even come close to these guys! Heck i place this album in the top ten albums of all time...the lyrics are superb & the lead singers dreamy voice lends each & every track a raw genuine emotion that is so compelling, you go into a daze listenin to it...dont miss this, its BIG!

Coldplay's Parachutes is an astonishingly beautiful record. It's destined to be one of the most talked about records of the year and thank god I found out about it.

Coldplay is such a great band, and I think that because their music is somewhat different than any other band that I has captured my attention. Most of all they are unique, and offer a picture of emotonal pain, and emotional happiness, and that makes coldplay so great. You can never get tired of this band, when you are in a mood that is dark and you feel under the weather, just pop in Coldplay and you will feel better in no time. This Album, is one of the best that I have seen, it is dark, rich and really breaths to life the human heart. It paints a picture of reality and fantasy. I love it!!

I don't give out 5 stars very often. I really like this album- it mixes well when I play it before my Radiohead album and after my Travis album because they all go along the same line. But I was really hoping they would just rock out on a song or two, and they didn't.

This is a great album for people who don't need the content spoon fed to them. Yes they are ''influenced'' by Radiohead and Travis, but they are not some cheap rip off. First of all they take what bands have done before them and make it their own. You will be hard prassed to find any band that hasn't been influenced by somebody or any band who can make the influences sound so good. The other thing is Travis and Radiohead are great bands and being influenced by them beats being influenced by whatever is fueling America's music scene today.

Colplay is never disapointing. Actually I first discovered Colplay in A Rush Of Blood To The Head, but didn't think much at first. But then I recently bought X&Y, then Parachutes. So I am a little late with things... But I totally love them now.

There is more to Coldplay than ''Yellow.''This very impressive debut has excellent lyrics and wonderfully melodic tunes. The only problem with the album is that it has the Elliot Smith, Gin Blossoms, and Toad of the Wet Sprocket disease. The main symptom consists of many of the songs sounding generally the same. A bit frustrating, but with the songs being so good it can be overlooked. The key to their great sound...lead singer's voice. Amazing!

Coming from a middle-aged California man, who went to college fueled by KROQ in the 80's... Coldplay is just plain killer. I've got a good track of picking winners. When I first heard U2's Boy, I suspected greatness. Saw Sting in The Who's Quadrophenia, and then caught the Police---and knew they'd be big. Coldplay's Parachutes has that essence of greatness. I'd love to see these guys surprise the world with a homerun follow-up album.

This is a marvelous album. Lovely melodies, beautiful lyrics...relaxing at times and often inspiring.

Contrary to what some critics have said, this is a fantastic album from a band with its own original sound. Each track is different, yet all hold an underlying soothing theme. Unlike other albums, you won't find only one or two songs you like and hate the rest. The entire album is interesting and has a flow that allows you to listen from beginning to end without jumping around. If you are looking for an album to relax to and enjoy, then Coldplay's Parachutes is the one for you.

I was listening to the radio one evening, when I heard the airy catchy tune of Coldplay's "Speed of Sound". I, of course, had never heard this song before, but I liked it right away. I then went online and found out that their third album "X&Y" wasn't coming out yet for awhile. I figured since I liked one song of them, I must like others! So i listened to "A Rush Of Blood To The Head", and the second I heard "Clocks" I was sold. I bought the album, wishing I had known about Coldplay so many years ago!!! Well, "X&Y" finally came out and I sang to its songs as well, forgeting that they had a very 1st album called "Parachutes". One day, my brain suddenly remembered, and I checked online again. After listening to a few songs, I knew that this was a must-have album, as it seems all of Coldplay's albums are. After finally buying their first album, I listened to every single song and was, well, my jaw dropped! They have so much raw energy put forth into EVERY song on EVERY album, and finally listening to all their album songs was AMAZING. "Parachutes" is an extremely cathcy album of songs with favourites like "Spies", "Yellow", and "Shiver" which sent a shiver through me!!!!! "Don't Panic" can make things like traffic seem beautiful! All in all, I deeply respect Coldplay and all they have accomplished. Thank You ~ Guy Berryman, Jonny Buckland, Will Champion, and Chris Martin! *****Love yah Coldplay***** =Fair Trade=
