by Mike Stern

Jazz guitarists tend to work well together. On PLAY, Mike Stern calls on two of the most acclaimed guitarists of the day, John Scofield and Bill Frisell, to go one-on-one with him. And though there's plenty of creative friction between Stern and his guests, it's no surprise that empathy and cooperation remain the code words of the recording. Stern's three tracks with Scofielld are frisky and funky as befits two frisky and funky players. Working out on some greasy grooves, the two axemen -- old friends from their days with Miles Davis -- elicit sparks from each other. The cuts with Frisell, a player enamored with texture and space, are, characteristically, moodier than the Sco collaborations. "Blue Tone," and "All Heart" are mellow mid-tempo performances that bring out the lyrical best in both guitarists, while the more propulsive "Frizz" and "Big Kids" find Frisell and Stern having serious fun. The fleet-fingered Stern gives himself three numbers to strut his own stuff, casting off all doubts that he can hold his own even without his high- profile friends.
