Pump It Up

Pump It Up

by Les McCann

Keyboardist, singer, and songwriter Les McCann obviously loves the ladies, and judging by the caliber of singers on Pump It Up, there are also ladies who love Les. He and jazz vocalist Dianne Reeves pour their hearts into a duet of Bill Withers’s ballad “You Just Can’t Love it Away,” and pop singer Bonnie Raitt duets with McCann on his bottom-of-the-bottle blues “The Truth.” The rest of the album goes for the funk. “Let It Ride (the Train)” is a chugging number, with McCann’s lyrics touting his sexual prowess more than rail travel. And the title cut is the 60-something singer’s announcement to the world that he doesn’t need Viagra. “I Can’t Stand It,” which is as rough and rowdy as early James Brown recordings, has a more universal theme, “Stand up for yourself.” “So What” is slower but also loaded with McCann’s advice for the lovelorn. Evoking the soul jazz of the ‘60s, from which McCann initially arose, is “Tryin’ to Make it Real,” which features Billy Preston on organ. Another holdover from that era is saxophonist Maceo Parker, who blows a fiery alto solo on “Funk It (Let the Music Play).” McCann became a household word in 1969 when he cut the classic protest tune “Compared to What.” While nothing on Pump It Up has that kind of power, those who love Les McCann will get a kick out of these deep, funky grooves.
