`Pumpkin Soup¿ by Helen Cooper tells the story of Cat, Squrriel and Duck. They all have their share of work to make pumpkin soup together until one day when Duck decides he wants to stir the soup instead of measuring the salt. Cat and Squirrel don¿t like this so Duck leaves in huff. He is gone for the whole day, leaving Cat and Squrriel to wonder what horrible things are happening to Duck alone in the forest. In the end, Duck returns home and the animals discover that maybe switching things up every once in awhile isn¿t such a bad thing, especially if it helps out a friend. The story itself is very cute and while it sounds a little cliché and diaditic, it doesn¿t seem that way when you are reading. The characters are interesting and for a short picture book, they have a lot of personality. The illustrations in `Pumpkin Soup¿ won the Kate Greenaway Award for Children¿s Illustrations and it¿s easy to see why. The paintings are very soft and muted but Cooper uses a lot of oranges and reds in the pictures so they feel very warm. Cat, Squrriel and Duck look so soft that you just want to reach through the page and pet them and their expressions and attitudes are very realistic. I quite enjoyed the extra effort Cooper put in the illustrations with a little ladybug and junebug appearing on every page, like the mouse in the Mercer Mayer books and each illustrations compliments and adds to the text. A very good book to read to your little ones, especially on a cold fall day.

I bought this for my 2 year old and he absolutly loves it! It is a very cute book and it keeps my son's attention which is very difficult to do at times. I still have to read this to him ever night before he goes to bed even a month after halloween.

Our family loves this book. We read it lots before bed and it reminds us everyone deserves a chance to try new things, we must share what's important to us with those who are important to us and it instills empathy with young readers who worry if Duck will ever come home! Our 2 year old is always a bit 'scared' when Squirrel and Cat worry Duck will encounter Wolves, Fox, Bear or Witches! Our five year old always delights in knowing Duck will be messy in comparison to Squirrel in stirring the soup. Everyone finds it interesting when Squirrel, Cat and Duck are fighting again even after what they have been through. Lovely book, highly recommend it.

It doesn't get any better than this: Simply amazing artwork for a beautifully told story about how hard it is to take turns and how love and friendship will prevail. And the perfect finish of this literary feast is a recipe for pumpkin soup, easy enough to prepare with your little ones. 'Pumpkin Soup' is the best you ever tasted. Enjoy!

My two four year olds love this book. We have read it over and over. It's the kind of book that even grown-ups enjoy. A lesson about sharing combined with beautiful illustrations and subtle humor.
