Saturday Night [London Cast Recording]

Saturday Night [London Cast Recording]

Stephen Sondheim, whose restless creativity has pushed the envelope of musical stagecraft, is the major Broadway composer of the last 40 years. His great shows, for which he is sole composer, include such theatrical landmarks as A FUNNY THING HAPPENED ON THE WAY TO THE FORUM, COMPANY, FOLLIES, A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC, SWEENEY TODD, SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH GEORGE, and PASSION. No wonder that when a small London theater company announced the 1997 world premiere of an unproduced 1954 Sondheim musical, SATURDAY NIGHT, international critics sat up and took notice. Set in Brooklyn in 1929, SATURDAY NIGHT is airy entertainment, but Sondheim's trademarks -- - a remarkable facility with language and rhyme, contrapuntal harmonies, and a broad array of musical influences -- - are already apparent. This crisp and jaunty cast recording features a young, energetic cast performing hitherto unknown Sondheim gems like "One Wonderful Day," "I Remember That," and "So Many People." This is one of 1998's most intriguing, and rewarding, releases.
