Inspired by two-time Oscar-winning documentarian Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy and Andy Schocken's film of the same name, Song of Lahore is an album centered around the Sachal Ensemble: musicians forced to play in secret under strict Shariah law of their home country, Pakistan. The album contains songs performed by the Ensemble with Western luminaries such as Wynton Marsalis, Jim James (My Morning Jacket), Nels Cline (Wilco), Sean Lennon, Susan Tedeschi & Derek Trucks (Tedeschi Trucks Band), Madeleine Peyroux, Bilal (Kendrick Lamar) and acting legend Meryl Streep among others.

Song of Lahore is not a soundtrack in the traditional sense, but rather a companion album to the film.

The songs these incredibly talented artists perform were written by some of the greatest songwriters of the 20th century; including George Harrison, Stevie Wonder, Allen Toussaint, Michael Jackson, Bob Dylan, Bob Marley, Billy Taylor, Nick Lowe and Duke Ellington. Pierced into the middle of this unique collection is a poem by India’s 4-time Nobel Prize for Literature nominee, Faiz Ahmad Faiz. Set to original music written by Michael Leonhart and read by Oscar-winning legendary actress, Meryl Streep. The Song Of Lahore is the sound of humanity at work.
