Songs I Heard

Songs I Heard

by Harry Connick Jr.

Songs I Heard takes Harry Connick Jr. on a sentimental journey back to his childhood. On this delightful project, the singer/pianist reinterprets songs from musical films that affected him as an impressionable youth. Connick, acting as his own arranger, orchestrator, and conductor, puts lively and imaginative new spins on classics from The Wizard of Oz, Mary Poppins, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, The Sound of Music, and Annie. Variety rules: “Supercalifragilsticexpialidocious” and “A Spoonful of Sugar” are given funky New Orleans treatments; “Over the Rainbow” is lush and symphonic; “Ding Dong! The Witch Is Dead” is given an Ellington-esque, all-instrumental treatment; “Golden Ticket/I Want It Now,” “Oompa Loompa,” and “Pure Imagination/Candy Man” are solo piano-and-voice performances. Each interpretation is heartfelt and intelligently approached: This isn’t a children’s album, though kids with alert musical taste will certainly enjoy it. Here, Connick has tapped into his inner child, and the results are evidence of distinct artistic maturation.

Big fan of Harry Jr and my children enjoy it with me. Big hit in the car to pass the time - they already know the songs ! Stay Awake is a ''must hear''. Fabulous album.

I really enjoy listening to these songs.. he does a great job with them, some better than the original.

Harry's musical genius shines again! Every track is a wonderful surprise, taking songs from shows we remember as kids and ''kicking them up a notch'' with New Orleans jazz and FABULOUS musicians (all our favorites: Lucien, Leroy, Goold, Schumacher and all the others I don't have space to list). This is just a really fun CD that my 15-month-old and my 10-year-old enjoy just as much as their parents do!

Harry sounds awesome! Some of the most creative arrangements of these well-known pieces I've ever heard. I just wish there were more soloists from his amazing band.

This is arguably Harry's best album since ''We Are In Love''. His renditions of these film classics from Mary Poppins, Willy Wonka, the Sound of Music, the Wizard of Oz, and Annie are delightful, although I would have preferred hearing a total version of ''Pure Imagination'' and ''Golden Ticket'', rather than in a medley. The Willy Wonka songs have long been ignored, but Harry shows full appreciation of them.
