Pull up a lounge chair and have a cocktail at Sunset Beach – it comes with a twist.

Drue Campbell’s life is adrift. Out of a job and down on her luck, life doesn’t seem to be getting any better when her estranged father, Brice Campbell, a flamboyant personal injury attorney, shows up at her mother’s funeral after a twenty-year absence. Worse, he’s remarried – to Drue’s eighth grade frenemy, Wendy, now his office manager. And they’re offering her a job.

It seems like the job from hell, but the offer is sweetened by the news of her inheritance – her grandparents’ beach bungalow in the sleepy town of Sunset Beach, a charming but storm-damaged eyesore now surrounded by waterfront McMansions.

With no other prospects, Drue begrudgingly joins the firm, spending her days screening out the grifters whose phone calls flood the law office. Working with Wendy is no picnic either. But when a suspicious death at an exclusive beach resort nearby exposes possible corruption at her father’s firm, she goes from unwilling cubicle rat to unwitting investigator, and is drawn into a case that may – or may not – involve her father. With an office romance building, a decades-old missing persons case re-opened, and a cottage in rehab, one thing is for sure at Sunset Beach: there’s a storm on the horizon.

Sunset Beach is a compelling ride, full of Mary Kay Andrews' signature wit, heart, and charm.

Wow! Mary Kay Andrews did it again. I got an early version of this through Netgalley to review. This is my honest opinion. I loved the story. It was a little different from her other books I’ve read, but the beach is still heavily intrenched in the story. Drue Campbell’s life is in ruins, until her father comes back into her life offering her a job and her grandparents’ house. While trying to get her life back on track, along with fixing up the rundown beach house, Drue finds herself involved with an old cold case and a more recent suspicious murder. I loved how Ms. Andrews winds the two stories together in the book. There are periodic flashbacks to the time of the cold case. There were lots of twists and turns in the plot. In the end, Drue finally has her life back in order. She now has a closeness with her Dad, a new position at work, and a love interest, making her new life on Sunset Beach a great one. Well done!

Sunset Beach was everything I’ve come to expect in MKA’s books! The setting on the west coast of FL was described so well that I felt like I had sand on my feet. As always the characters are so real that you almost expect them to talk to you. Drue, the main character is a strong female with enough vulnerability to make her relatable. I think I’ve read all of MKA’s books and this is one of my favorites. There’s a mystery, some romance and a really good storyline. My only regret is I’ve finished it.

I won’t say much because this book is too good to give anything away. But know that it is AMAZING! It is a page-turner and one you don’t want to miss. This was my first read by Mary Kay Andrews and she did not disappoint.

I love a book that takes me away, the fact that this one is to a beach, in a somewhat familiar area of Florida, and hits me with great writing is even better. Mary Kay Andrews is one of the queens of the Beach Read, and Sunset Beach is a hit! From the start I was cheering for Drue, a rather edgy thirty-something woman who has just lost her mom and her ability to kite board due to an accident and injury. Her estranged father showing up is so surprising, but she is out of luck and takes his offer to return to St Petersburg and work for him. The ramshackle beach cottage is her own paradise, bringing memories of her grandparents and youth to mind. Yes it’s a hot mess after hurricanes and neglect, but it’s all hers and she wants to love it back to it’s former safe haven. I adore a mystery, an unsolved crime or cold case, and Andrews has given us two to ponder with Drue. I was able to hear Mary Kay speak last week at Vero Beach Book Center and I was enthralled with where she gets her stories. Nice people write about the most twisted stories! People, place and circumstances that draw you in are what made this book a total win for me. I haven’t read all of Andrew’s books, but I did purchase last year’s release, THE HIGH TIDE CLUB while at her event, because waiting for another one next year is just too long to wait!

Fast paced beach read/cozy mystery that will have you rooting for Down-on-her-Luck Drue. She is forced to work for her estranged father in his personal injury law firm so she can pay the bills and rehab the beach cottage inherited from her beloved grandparents. She finds long ago documents which sends her on the hunt for answers in her family history, while throwing suspicions on a father not seen in over 20 years. Strong story line and nice mix of supporting characters. Thanks to .#NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for advance digital copy

Drue was feeling pretty low – she had had a debilitating accident, her mother passed away and she lost her job. Her long estranged father appeared after the funeral and invited her to move across the state of Florida and work for him. It turned out that her mother had hung onto a beach cottage that had belonged to her parents as a legacy for Drue. She had reconnected with her father, had a place to live and a job. Things were looking up, right? Not so much. As she was trying to get to work on her first day her car won’t start, she has to walk to a bus stop on her bad knee and then found out her new boss was her step-mother (whom she didn’t even know she had)and who happens to be her eighth grade frenemy. Drue tries to make the best of a hard situation. Her father is an attorney who advertises for slip and fall – “slip and fall? Give Brice a call” – car accident victims, etc. While working the front reception desk, Drue meets a woman who feels that Brice has not given her adequate representation. After looking at the case Drue agrees and pursues a different career path, that of investigator. I thoroughly enjoyed the book. It was different from most of Ms. Andrews’ books but very good. There are some unknowns that keep your interest to the end.

This is the first book I have ready by Mary Kay Andrews and I was very impressed. Drue is 36 years old, has no career and her life is without purpose. She has lost her mother to cancer and Drue is just lost in life. Her estranged father suddenly offers her a job in his law firm. Drue excepts the job, and returns home to where she grew up 20 years ago. Drue blames her dad for everything that has happened in the past. Drue also find out that her dad married her best friend from school Wendy. Drue does get some good news. She finds out that the beachfront house she spent her summers in when she was young is now hers. One of the only places in her life that ever made her happy, is now hers. While renovating her late grandparents’ cottage, she discovers police files from a missing person’s case from the 1980s. Colleen Hicks disappeared without a trace. She was a married woman with an abusive husband. She throws herself into information about the case and finds evidence that her own family might be involved in a 40-year old missing persons case. Drue throws into both of the investigations. Now Drue might have put herself in danger.

Yay!! To me, Mary Kay Andrews is synonymous with the start of summer. I was chomping at the bit for a big block of time to sit down and devour Sunset Beach, and once again, our author does not disappoint! There is mystery; there is romance, some laughs and of course, good ol' southern charm. I especially liked how she seamlessly wove together two storylines - you have to finish the novel to know how they tie together! This is a must-read for summer and if you insist on waiting til June or beyond, bring it to the beach! Make it your next book club selection! This is exactly what I needed to kick off my summer. Thanks to #NetGalley for the opportunity to preview #SunsetBeach by @MKayAndrews - as always, I loved it!

I have been reading books by Mary Kay Andrews and her pseudonym Kathy Hogan Trocheck for years and years. She has only bombed maybe once and when I mean bombed -I mean that she got two stars from me. Most of her books are 3's, 4's and even 5's. I had a difficult time deciding what amount of stars to give this book. It is written in such a different style that I'm used to from the author. These characters are deeper with more problems to deal with and the issues they are dealing with are grittier. The fact that there are jumps in time (several different murders one forty years in the past) didn't do me any good until I really got into the book -then my unhappiness with this book flew out of the window. I don't really like having to take so much time to 'get into a book' (the book was never bad, it just was a bit slow)but this book slowly pulled me in and I found myself liking that. Character growth abounded (I really did not like Drue at first) and the character's, like Wendy, that I disliked at first, I came to like and the character's that I liked at first I came to distrust even before the denouement. What I did NOT see coming was how the forty-year-old murder happened and why it happened and WHO made it happen! This did turn out to be an engrossing read for me and one I will recommend to mystery lovers who like a tiny side of romance. And I do mean tiny! *ARC supplied by the publisher.

I actually finished Sunset Beach several days ago. I couldn’t post a review because I was in mourning. I did not want this book to end! The characters are real, the plot is believable and the twists in the story make it a hard to put down book. After the loss of her mother and a career ending injury, Drue accepts the offer to start a fresh life from her dad. New job, new stepmom and new location. What could be bad? Well hang on! In true Mary Kay Andrews fashion the conflicts surrounding Drue are what keep the reader turning pages. Her stepmom was her best friend growing up, her new job gets her involved in a murder and her new home has it’s own hidden secrets. And, of course, Drue meets a guy that rubs her the wrong way and the right way if you get my meaning! Do yourself a favor and grab Sunset Beach by Mary Kay Andrews as soon as it hits the shelf. I voluntarily received a copy of this book from Netgalley.

I really enjoyed Mary Kay Andrews’ Sunset Beach! It’s a great blend of family drama, romance, and mystery. I’ve listened to several of Mary Kay Andrews’ books, and I have enjoyed them all. Sunset Beach has more depth and a better-defined mystery plot than Ms. Andrews’ prior books, and I couldn’t put down this fun cozy mystery. There is a good deal of scene set up and character development, and lucky for the reader, the plot contains not one but two mysteries. Both are nicely plotted with building tension throughout the story. My usual complaint about cozy mysteries is that the crime is presented, and then it is basically abandoned until the miraculous reveal at the end. I was so delighted that the mysteries and the unraveling were both thoughtfully explored throughout the story. The story is told from the point of view of the heroine, Drue Campbell. She is portrayed as a strong, independent woman, but there were many times that she seemed like a woman-child who petulantly fought her father and her, rather unlikable, step-mother. While pursuing justice for Jazmin and a 40-year-old missing person case, Drue juggles a few prospective romantic relationships. I loved the author’s use of the shabby and in-need-of-a-renovation beach cottage as a metaphor for Drue’s life. Between the chip on her shoulder, her life changing accident, and the loss of her mother and job, Drue is in a state of disrepair at the start of the book. As she investigates the mysteries and cleans up her inherited cottage, her life and attitude also improve. Sunset Beach is an engaging, easy-to-read cozy mystery. While the cover might bring to mind “beach read”, readers will be glued to the book wherever they are reading!
