Overview

Closing the millennium by switching labels and conquering the U.K. (where their TRAMPOLINE album went triple platinum), the Mavericks, a great band that gets better with age, look back and ahead on the wittily titled SUPER COLOSSAL SMASH HITS OF THE 90's. Eight tracks from the band's four MCA albums are buttressed here by four outstanding new tracks that can only whet the appetite for a whole new Mavericks album, and soon. The new tracks include a pants-down cover version of the Tremeloes' 1967 hit "Here Comes My Baby," a raucous affair that would have been right at home on TRAMPOLINE; the evocative "Things I Cannot Change," replete with Nick Kane's note-perfect jangly guitar fills and an urgent vocal from Raul Malo; the fanciful, Latin-flavored "Pizzirico"; and "Think of Me," originally recorded by Buck Owens, here rendered as Dwight Yoakam might realize it. Otherwise, you've got some of the best music of the '90s, from the jubilant "Dance the Night Away" to "There Goes My Heart," with Malo in full Roy Orbison bring-you-to-your-knees mode -- to the stirring title track from the band's first album, "From Hell to Paradise," excoriating the horror Fidel Castro has created in Cuba while relating Malo's grandparents' journey from their homeland to the United States. What a legacy -- what a band.
