About the Author

Patricia M. Scarry (1924–1995) was a writer of children's books. She wrote many stories that were illustrated by her husband, Richard Scarry, including Good Night, Little BearThe Bunny Book, and The Fishing Cat.

J. P. Miller (1913-2001) illustrated many Golden Books from the 1940s through the 1970s, some written by Margaret Wise Brown and Edith Kunhardt. Before becoming a children's book illustrator, Miller had worked in the Walt Disney Studios' elite character modeling department, creating characters (such as the dwarf Dopey) for Disney's first feature film, Snow White. He later designed the character of the toy maker Geppetto for Pinocchio.

I had completely forgotten the title of this book- in my family, we've always referred to it as "The Bear Book". When I was young, my mother read it to me and I decided I wanted a Christmas orange, just like Little Bear gets in the book. So, of course, my cousins had to have one too! It's become a cherished holiday tradition, and now that my cousins and I all have children of our own, they've asked where "the oranges come from". When I saw this at my local B and N, I wasn't sure what it was at first, only that I remembered it from somewhere (my own "Bear Book" fell apart when I was around twelve) and I kept flipping through the pages until I saw the pine needle sticker. I knew what it was then! I immediately called my cousin, who bought a copy for her two year old- and bought a copy for my four month old son! I would strongly recommend this book. Any book that is directly responsible for a thirty year old Christmas tradition is pretty amazing, as far as I'm concerned!

At Christmas time, this book is a wonderful way to remember the holidays, in illustrations, words, and smells. Very sweet and family oriented. A wholesome joy for infant to preschool.

I loved this book as a child and still have my original from 1970 yep no sniffing left in it, so going to order my 3 children 1 each for themselves

I purchased this due to the wonderful reviews. It sounded like a good idea....the smells of Christmas. The problem I have is the book we received didn't have any scents we could smell! I suppose it may have had scents when it was made, but they didn't make the trip to us. Thankfully the story is cute & it served the purpose of teaching my 3 year old about Santa. He enjoys the book & he does ask for it. However, it's misleading to imply the book will have scents when it arrives

I remember my mom reading this book to me when I was young. When she bought it for my daughter I teared up. When I read and sniffed with my daughter so many memories of Christmases past came flooding in. Now I am making memories with my daughter. The book is sweet and the illustrations are cute. My daughter especially loves the candy cane and hot chocolate!

I could not believe how many people remember and loved this book as a kid. I flipped out when I found it in a B Dalton and bought a new copy for myself and my new born nephew. This is a must have book for anyone who has a child in their life. (Buy two copies because the scratch and sniff will get worn out with how many time they will want it read to them!)

I just dug through boxes of old books in my parent's basement to find this book. It was one of my favorites 25 years ago, and I still smell certain odors that remind me of the book! I was anxious to read it to my two-year-old daughter this Christmas. However, my copy was falling apart, and the scratch-and-sniff portions had lost most of their smell. I'm so excited that it is still in print, and I can share it with my family this holiday season!

I am so excited to find this book!!!! I had forgotten about it until my mom and I went christmas shopping a few days ago. We went into a store, I was smelling christmas scented candles and a peppermint cocco candle brought the memory of this book back into my mind as if I were still in my mother's lap and she was reading it to me. I cannot wait until 5pm so I can run out and pick this up!!!! If you have children of your own, or nieces, nephews, etc... YOU MUST PICK THIS UP FOR THEM!!!!

I first remember reading this back in the late 70's or 80s and being totally enamored of the scratch and sniff idea! I don't think kids get them much today but back in the early 80's we collected scratch and sniff stickers like fiends. I remember a couple of teachers used to give them out if you got good grades. There were even scratch and sniff stickers that smelled like skunks! Ahh... good times. So this book holds quite a nostalgia factor for me. The text of the book is pretty basic, with short declarative sentences. Great for beginning readers. The illustrations are cute and cartoony. It's a pretty typical "getting ready for Christmas" story, but the scratch and sniff adds a fun element and the art is sweet.

I bought a copy of this book many years ago for my own children. The story is delightful and the fragrance stickers were good smelling and lasted for years. Recently I bought copies for my grandchildren. The fragrance sticker for pine was great; the orange had faintly the smell of orange. All the rest had slightly unpleasant smells like old cardboard. Barnes and Noble graciously and quickly replaced the copy. Since it was sent directly to my grandchild I don't know yet if the fragrance stickers worked. I would definitely say, buy this book -- but buy it in the store where you can check the fragrance stickers.

the book is great but barnes & noble... not so much! ordered 2 books and 2 puzzles. 5 days after order, i get an email saying they cancelled the puzzles because they couldn't get them. The books came and both were missing stickers... not a good experience!

I LOVE this book for the Holidays. I had it as a child and I just purchased it for my child. I love that it's scratch and sniff....ie. hot chocolate, christmas tree, etc. It just brings the book alive and really connects the story with your senses. Just wonderful!!!!

I was reading this book to my four year old granddaughter when my six year old grandson swiftly joined us on the couch. The scratch and sniff opportunities are a real reading hook for little ones. This is a great example of the rhythyms of life and how comforting these are for children. The main character, the young boy bear is learning that certain steps lead up to Christmas, each in itself a joyful unfolding of events yet to come. The entire family gets involved in making Christmas, from Momma bear's apple pie to Poppa bear's harvesting of the Christmas tree. The entire family comes together to decorate the tree and ultimately to enjoy the happiest Christmas ever.

My kids like it just as much as I did. The scratch and sniff stickers might not work quite as well as I remember, but that could just be how I remember it.

I loved this book as a child. I vividly remember the scratch and sniff stickers as a child. I bought this for my 2 year old and he loves the story as much as the scratch and sniff stickers.

This book is very nice to read, with creative scents, some familiar, and some different. A great book for the holiday season, but good for other times of the year as well.

I read this book to my son 33 years ago and he loved the story as well as scratching and sniffing. I was thrilled to be able to find a new copy for my grandchildren so they could enjoy the same fun time at the holidays. They love it too and it makes the holiday even more special to share the time reading it together. I highly recommend this book. To me it is a classic!

I gave this to my sons teachers. I also gave them baby food jars with each scent to pass around for each page. This is a sweet story for the holidays
