Just when I think I have a favorite Untouchable Darcy gives me the heart-melting Duke of Lies! I almost jumped out of my skin when he returned after hints of what he was like before. But he was definitely not the same person as before. There is so much to uncover and keep secret in this book that I was on the edge of my seat the whole time not know ing what was coming. The Duke of Lies fits him perfectly, but not for reasons you think and when the full truth comes out you will be jumping up and down. I somewhat figured out who was behind things, but not the full truth of it and it was shocking. Verity is determined to make sure her son turns out to be a great man unlike the men in her life. She had been through a lot of things, but they just made her stronger. She found real love while seeing right through lies, but didn’t give up. Rufus is not the person he seems to be and he will melt your heart. As his story came out I loved him more and more. He was determined to keep her and Beau safe no matter what happened. I loved him when he was reading to Beau and everything he did for her. Of course, you know when the Untouchables get involved things are going to turn out perfectly.

I received this ARC in exchange for an honest review from NetGalley. This is the second book by Darcy Burke that I have read and I liked this one even more than I did the first. I will say that for me it dragged a bit toward the end but that is my opinion. I liked the main characters and felt they were well developed. I can't really think of a lot to say for this one except I truly enjoyed the story and will be getting the other books in this series. It definitely can be a stand alone novel but I want to read all the other eight in The Untouchables. The sign of a good book to me is one that I don't want to put down after I start it and this definitely qualified. I recommend this book.

I loved The Duke of Lies by Darcy Burke! This series gets better with each new book. They are all worth reading, but this one is definitely my new favorite. Verity Beaumont has spent her whole life dealing with domineering men so when her husband disappeared six and half years ago Verity met it with a sense of relief not loss. So just when she could have declared him legally dead in the eyes of the law having him return is not only a little concerning, but puzzling as well. Rufus Beaumont returns after being gone for six and half years and he comes back as a totally changed man and intends to prove to his wife that their marriage is worth fighting for. When the truth about his disappearance comes out he must prove to Verity that he is a different man and wants to be the husband and father that he should have always been to both her and their son Beau. I was given an ARC from the author/publisher. All conclusions are mine and mine alone.

Verity Beaumont, who we met in Duke of Ruin, is counting down the days until her missing husband can be declared legally dead. Six and a half years ago he went to London and no one has seen or heard from him since. Verity has raised their son, Beau, in the peace that has enveloped Beaumont Tower since his disappearance. Rufus Beaumont has returned to find his home in negligent disrepair, a son he didn’t know he had, and a skittish wife. After being gone for so long, it is widely remarked that he is much changed. But then, he isn’t Rufus Beaumont at all. The ninth book in the Untouchable series is magnificent. It is full of mystery, embezzlement, murder and intrigue. There is so much going on in this book but to discuss the details would spoil the story. I love that the Untouchables have all banded together as friends and they come to the aid of one another in their darkest hours. I was a bit disappointed that everything was wrapped up so quickly and neatly at the end. It was such a good read that I didn’t want it to end.

When your husband has been missing for 6-1/2 years, and you are looking forward to his being declared dead so you can move with your life, the last thing you want is for him to show back up! But when he is much nicer than he used to be, and doesn't look exactly like you remember, things get really interesting. Just what is going on? Verify definitely has some decisions to make. I was given an ARC for my honest opinion.

This was a fun story.  Verity and Kit were great characters and they carried the plot really well.  I liked the concept; a man pretends to be a duke in order to steal funds to buy a new ship, meets his dead half-brother’s clearly abused widow and her son, and comes to realize that life on land can be home even more so than the sea if you have the right people in it.  Their adventure was enjoyable and entertaining, and I am glad Rufus ended up in fact being dead because, from all accounts, he was a horrible man, and I’m glad that Verity found true happiness with a man who could appreciate her. Beau, her son, was a priceless character, and I think it was definitely him who won Kit’s loyalty and love first. He was just too precious to resist and Kit was no match for him.  The villain and conflict were engaging and fit the story really well. Overall, I really liked this story.  I haven’t read a lot by this author but I definitely wasn’t disappointed.  It has passion, suspense, adventure, humor, and strong characters that all blend into a great love story.

The Duke of Lies Intriguing and captivating story that I could not read fast enough to find out what happens next. Darcy this series gets better and better with every book you write. The chemistry between Rufus and Verity is palpable and Beau is just adorable with all his animals. Rufus returns to claim what is rightfully his after being gone for almost seven years. He is a totally different person and he will do anything to protect the ones loves. Verity is prettified that Rufus has returned and vows to protect Beau. Rufus’ behavior is so different from before he disappeared that Verity starts to doubt his identity. This ARC was given to me in exchange for a fair and honest review.

captivating and charming THE DUKE OF LIES is the ninth instalment in Darcy Burke’s THE UNTOUCHABLES historical romance series. This is Verity Beaumont, and Rufus Beaumont ‘s, Duke of Blackburn ( aka Captain Christopher ‘Kit’ Powell) story line. THE DUKE OF LIES can be read as a stand alone without any difficulty. Any important information from the previous story lines is revealed where necessary. Told from dual third person perspectives (Verity and Rufus/Kit) THE DUKE OF LIES follows the building relationship between Verity Beaumont, and Rufus Beaumont, the Duke of Blackburn ( aka Captain Christopher ‘Kit’ Powell). Verity Beaumont’s husband has been missing for six and half years. There has been no word, no sightings, and no news about his demise. With the seven year mark quickly approaching, our heroine, along with their six year old son Beau, is hoping to move on with her life when the man in question resurfaces-a changed man similar in appearance but for all intents and purposes not the man she remembers as abusive and mean. What ensues is the ‘rekindling’ romance between Verity and Rufus, and the potential fall-out when the truth is revealed. Rufus Beaumont has a reputation. Abusive, dark and brutish, Rufus’ disappearance meant a reprieve for everyone he left behind. The man who returned in his absence, is not the same man our heroine remembers, but a kind and gentle man who is willing to begin anew. Physical similarities aside, the man with whom Verity will fall in love is a stranger who is willing to accept everything and more including the love of Verity and her six year old son. THE DUKE OF LIES is an energetic tale of second chances (of sorts). An uplifting and spirited story line about secrets, lies, romance and love. The premise is captivating and charming; the characters are determined, dynamic and tenacious; the romance is fated and passionate.

What would you do if your despised, missing husband suddenly returned after 6 ½ years? For Verity Beaumont it was almost soul crushing. Except this version of the man she loathes is vastly different than the man she married. Verity vows to watch his every move so she is not caught unaware if the man he was before surfaces. She must; not only for her self-preservation but that of her son. A son who completely adores this man. Rufus Beaumont, Duke of Blackburn, returns home to find a lovely wife and boy. Much has changed since he’s been away and he soon comes to love the land and the people, especially his wife and son. Now all he has to do is prove to her that he may not be the man she remembers, she can trust him. Wow! My heart dropped along with Verity’s when Rufus returned. And Verity’s ensuing turmoil jumped from the pages. While Rufus does what he must while wrestling with his conscious he soon won my heart over. Oh, and Verity’s domineering father – the slime oozed from every pore onto the pages. Secrets, danger, intrigue, and love fly off Darcy Burke’s pages. Add in the innocence and curiosity of a 6 year old and you have a well rounded story.

The Duke of Lies definitely lives up to its promise--there are quite a plethora of lies involved in Verity and Rufus's (if that is indeed his name...) tale. The biggest one is revealed very early on, but it takes quite some time for us to learn all of it. In the meantime, our hero is falling not only for his estranged wife but also for her son--as is the reader right along with him. Verity can tell that something's not right with the man who has returned after a six-and-a-half year absence, but enough things are close enough that it takes her a while to fully realize the truth. Even once that particular lie is revealed (and hey--this time the "duke" came up with his own moniker; that was a fun twist!) there are more to be discovered and solved. Though it wasn't terribly difficult to figure out who the true villains of the story were, things were definitely not easily resolved by any means--this is one book that was hard to put down once you'd started, because you just needed to see how they could make it to their (much deserved) HEA at last. Some of the characters from past books make appearances here--the hero and heroine from the last book ( The Duke of Ruin ) play the biggest role, since Diana and Verity are cousins--it would work just fine as a standalone if needed. Verity and Beau and Rufus's(?) story had a slightly different feel to it from the others in the series, but the romance and relationships portrayed were just as satisfying. Now bring on the next duke; I'm ready! ;) Rating: 4 stars / A- I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.

Another satisfying and delightful story from Darcy Burke. Her "Dukes" grab your hearts and you find yourself pulling for them all the way through the book! Verity Beaumont, Duchess of Blackburn is 6-1/2 years into what she hopes is widowhood. Her blackard of a abusive husband went missing and will be declared dead in 6 months. Freedom is so close from being controlled by men who hurt her, her father and her husband. She's finally looking to making a future for herself, her 6 year old son, Beau and the dukedom. Then her husband rides up to the manor one evening...Rufus Beaumont is back! His story was he was conscripted on a ship and just escaped. In reality he's the illegitimate son of Augustus, Rufus' uncle. Kit's privateering ship has burned and he's there to collect what Augustus promised him so he can rebuild. When he's mistaken for Rufus he goes with it to grab something of value and get on with his life. What he find instead is a strong, lovely widow, an engaging son and a mystery as to who embezzled funds from the estate for the past 6-1/2 years. There are no funds to pay him. As Darcy crafts this story of deception you find yourself caught up in the journey. Can Kit come clean and tell Verity he's really Kit? Will he take something of value and steal away leaving Verity and Beau wondering what happened? Will Verity figure out Kit's not Rufus? Read this engaging story and go on the twisty journey and be delighted for the whole book! Thank you Darcy for the ARC of this book for my honest review. Absolute delight as always.

Darcy Burke always excels at creating compelling characters with strong emotions and suspense thrown in to make her stories page turners. Being book 9 of the Untouchables Series, the writing is fresh and intriguing. Having thought her husband dead after leaving for war in the America's, Verity Beaumont and her young son finally feel life is settling down. She had been under the thumb of her father and then her husband before he left and is determined to find peace. That is until her husband, Rufus shows back up alive. But Rufus has changed. Having been imprisoned in America during the war, his only thoughts had been to return to England and live a calm life. But he finds Verity skeptical that he has changed so he sets out to convince her that they can have a good life. But he brought back a lot of pain and secrets of what happened to him during the war, and as secrets often do, they come out. Can Rufus and Verify be happy and find an enduring love? There were so many emotions and the interaction with their son will bring a smile and a heart tug. Yes, my romantic heart could not help but be engaged and I sighed as I turned the last page. What a wonderful series and although each book can be read as a standalone, I would not miss all the other great stories. Lori Dykes

I had read and enjoyed some of Darcy’s contemporary books and had no idea that she was writing historical as well, so when I saw her name on NG, I had to request. I loved Verity and Rufus. I loved her strength and her smarts and her want for things to have changed. Rufus is charming and sensitive. Their chemistry is not instant, which I enjoyed. I was so happy to see their relationship grow out of trust and friendship. Plot wise, it wasn’t quite what I was expecting, it was better. The truth of what is going on is shared fairly early and it was intriguing to read the layered reveals. I kept waiting for the other shoe to drop, but I love that Verity and Rufus were always truthful and communicating. Overall, it was quick and highly and enjoyable read. I’m disappointed that I somehow missed this entire series, but I’m planning on going back to read them. **Huge thanks to Darcy Burke for providing the arc free of charge**

I really enjoyed this story, which I have been looking forward to since meeting Verity in Duke of Ruin. Can you imagine having your husband come back after thinking him dead for many years? Verity can't believe that just when she is ready to move on with her life, that the man she despises is suddenly back...but he seems to be an entirely different man. Can she trust this change in her husband? I don't want to give away too much of the story, but you will definitely want to pick this up!! I don't know what Burke has planned for this series, but I hope there are more books to come as I have throughly enjoyed them!

After eight books, you somewhat expect a series to have grown a little stale, well you better tell that to Darcy Burke, because book 9 of The Untouchables is spectacular! And it even stands perfectly on its own! Just a few months shy of being declared dead, Rufus Beaumont, Duke of Blackburn, shocks his wife Verity with his unexpected return. Their short marriage had been unbearable for Verity, and she fears for her son Beau’s safety as well as her own. She had been considering marrying again, but all her hopes are dashed with Rufus’ appearance. However, he seems a changed man, but will it last? My goodness, what a fabulous book! And without giving away any spoilers, well, I can only rave and gush! Darcy Burke has written a highly original and compelling book (again!), and THE DUKE OF LIES is superbly written, and brilliantly plotted. What a gamble this was from the author, because THE DUKE OF LIES is a minefield, one little misstep and it all goes downhill. I was almost holding my breath because I feared that it might crumble at some point, but not in the least! Everything is perfect! Apart maybe from a sex scene that was exceedingly long (so long in fact, that I’m not sure if there were one or two scenes; it went on for pages. Still they were exquisitely written, and at the right place and the right time.) I was so pleased at Verity’s reaction to Rufus’ return. I applauded her calm, her stoicism, her intelligence, how she didn’t rush to conclusions, and I couldn’t wait to see how it would all unfold because this is one intricate plot! I kept wondering how Rufus would react, what would happen next. At first, I thought I had an idea of what had happened, and I was totally wrong – and ecstatic to be wrong! THE DUKE OF LIES is a work of genius! The characters are wonderfully complex, engaging; there is much mystery, and so many, many lies from so many people; I couldn’t wait to see it all uncovered. Diana and Simon, from the previous books, also feature prominently, and they are as superb as ever. THE DUKE OF LIES was a perilous endeavour for Darcy Burke to undertake, and has succeeded beyond my wildest dreams! I was invested in the story from the beginning; THE DUKE OF LIES is perfectly paced, everything is perfectly timed, the romance is exquisite. Beau comes off as a normal child, Rufus is my kind of hero; he is fabulous, as is Verity, and every character is splendidly crafted, everything is wonderfully done. I am ecstatic and deliriously happy at how THE DUKE OF LIES turned out! Darcy Burke has truly written a masterpiece, five stars are not nearly enough!

I didn’t want this book to end! I love this series and the addition of this book was a delight to read! Verity has shaped a life for herself with her young much loved son she loves that will one day be Duke of Blackburn. To say she is happy her husband will soon be declared deceased is an understatement. She is eager to claim a life that has never really been her own as her father has always been more interested in himself than in her and her husband of three months was entirely despicable. Her plans for the future that do NOT include her husband Rufus…and then…who should appear on her doorstep but…Rufus…but…boy has he changed! As the two get reacquainted she is more and more confused by how nice he is. How generous. How very much changed he seems to be. How could this have happened? Can it be true? And, why would she be attracted to the man she once loathed and wished dead? Well, I really do not want to give away any of this delightful story beyond saying that I loved Verity, Kit, Beau and the rest of the cast both new and old. I was thrilled at the way the story worked out and am eager to read whatever comes next! NOTE: As I read I was reminded of the movie Somersby with Richard Gere and Jodie Foster…thankfully the ending of this book was much happier than that movie! Thank you to the author who bequeathed me an ARC through NetGalley – This is my honest review. 5 Stars

The Duke of Lies is not always pretty. Darcy Burke paints a picture of some of life's ugliest moments for Verity and Rufus. Yet she finds the value in the experience. For this duo, love is about learning from past mistakes and rebuilding a stronger, equal foundation. Verity is spreading her wings after years of being tied down. She's learning to use her voice by speaking her mind and listening to her heart. All is going her way until her overbearing past reappears in her present. Rufus, her dead husband returns a changed man. Can they find the strength to give love another try? Life lessons abound in a tale of faith and second chances.
