Overview

Woody Guthrie is a pivotal figure in the changing soundscape of folk music in the United States. His dust bowl ballads and songs of the American landscape and the working people who lived in it returned folk to its roots as a vigorous vehicle for addressing issues of day-to-day life. With the help of his kindred spirits, the Weavers, Woody opens this disc with his anthem, "This Land Is Your Land," and closes it with "Hard Travelin'. " On the 22 tracks in between, Cisco Houston, Ramblin' Jack Elliot, Odetta, Jim Kweskin, Joan Baez, and Country Joe McDonald take up the mike. They hit topics that recurred in Guthrie's writing: songs for and about children ("Ship in the Sky"), historical commentary from a populist perspective ("The Sinking of the Reuben James," "1913 Massacre," "Jesus Christ"), the land and the landscape ("Roll on Columbia"), and the individual against society ("Deportee: Plane Wreck at Los Gatos, " "Pretty Boy Floyd"). Listening to Guthrie's admirers sing his songs is a good reminder of one of the balladeer's greatest lessons: Folk songs are passed on hand to hand, heart to heart.
