Overview

Spoiled. Headstrong. Pregnant.

Desperate to avoid marriage, NELL LILLINGTON refuses to divulge the name of her child's father and accepts her stepfather's decision that the baby be born at a Poor Farm and discreetly adopted.

Until an unused padded cell is opened and two small bodies fall out.

MARTIN RUTHERFORD, Nell's childhood friend, is the only one she can turn to, but he has his own plans—he wishes to build a grand department store in Chicago and become one of that growing city's merchant princes.

Nell and Martin's fates are steered off course by the secrets and lies of other people in this three-novel story.

Will Nell leave everything to start a new life in Chicago?

With two nearly sleepless nights bringing Nell's story to a close this is one of the best books I have read in some time. Thank you for writing the story into which I spent living in the past for the story of Nell and Martin.

Loved this series, great historical novels. Had to purchase the series after I couldn't put the first one down. Not too much romance, not gushy, just perfect. Great development of the main character, easy read, very well written. Will definitely be investing in more Jane Steen novels.

I've just read book 1, but enjoyed it immensely. The other boks must be a continuation of Nell's adventures as she tries to live her life on her own - independent of a husband who will control her life. Women's Lib seems to be in all of today's books regardless of the times they eere set in. I, for one, have enjoyed the freedom of beginng a wife and mother. Sure, i've not always done what I've wanted to, but, who does all the time? I enjoyed working a few years before marriage and did my job well but had no real ambitions to advance in the workplace. Why? The Lord gave me a servant's spirit, and I'm leading the life He has planned for me. A good life in which I have prospered. (Jeremiah 29?)
