Overview

An original and illuminating narrative revealing John F. Kennedy's lasting influence on America, by the acclaimed political analyst Larry J. Sabato.

John F. Kennedy died almost half a century ago-yet because of his extraordinary promise and untimely death, his star still resonates strongly. On the anniversary of his assassination, celebrated political scientist and analyst Larry J. Sabato-himself a teenager in the early 1960s and inspired by JFK and his presidency-explores the fascinating and powerful influence he has had over five decades on the media, the general public, and especially on each of his nine presidential successors.

A recent Gallup poll gave JFK the highest job approval rating of any of those successors, and millions remain captivated by his one thousand days in the White House. For all of them, and for those who feel he would not be judged so highly if he hadn't died tragically in office, The Kennedy Half-Century will be particularly revealing. Sabato reexamines JFK's assassination using heretofore unseen information to which he has had unique access, then documents the extraordinary effect the assassination has had on Americans of every modern generation through the most extensive survey ever undertaken on the public's view of a historical figure. The full and fascinating results, gathered by the accomplished pollsters Peter Hart and Geoff Garin, paint a compelling portrait of the country a half-century after the epochal killing. Just as significantly, Sabato shows how JFK's presidency has strongly influenced the policies and decisions-often in surprising ways-of every president since.

Among the hundreds of books devoted to JFK, The Kennedy Half-Century stands apart for its rich insight and original perspective. Anyone who reads it will appreciate in new ways the profound impact JFK's short presidency has had on our national psyche.

THE KENNEDY HALF CENTURY: THE PRESIDENCY, ASSASSINATION, AND LASTING LEGACY OF JOHN F. KENNEDY by LARRY J. SABATO is an interesting John F. Kennedy/Assassination/Public Opinion/Political & Government. The author has given the reader some insight into President John F. Kennedy, his legacy while in the oval office for only thousand days. He also sheds some light on the assassination if a beloved President. A fascinating read, filled with JFK facts and fiction on one of the sadness days in US history, November 22, 1963 in Dallas, Texas. Many remember the event still today, some fifty years later. Filled with new insights and revelations into the tragic death of JFK that left a nation in disbelieved. There are many what if's! If you would love to learn more on the plot, the assassination, and or his politics for a nation that others have followed to some degree, than I would encourage you to pick up this title. You will not regret it but will be enlightened. A well detailed, fascinating as well as educational title. Received for an honest review from the publisher and/or author. I really enjoyed Larry Sabato`s insights during the last presidential election cycle, so that is why I purchased this book. He did not disappoint me. Although I have read many accounts of the Kennedy assassination, he has brought up some I did not know about. Laid in the timeline, it was good reading. I especially liked the insights to the presidents following Kennedy, and how they used him to further their agendas.

Great book - explored both the man and the myth. As 50 years have passed since 11/22/63, it was time a completely honest examination of the JFK presidency was written.

I signed up for the online class, not making the connection with the book.  I was quite surprised when it arrived as I'd just heard it mentioned in the lecture.   The poll results are very detailed.  Some of the ideas he mentions have come up in other publications but not delved into so deeply.   JFK's impact on future presidencies is more far-reaching than I had imagined.
