Overview

Gus was once a much-loved dog who lived a happy life. Then things began to change. His owner neglected and eventually abandoned him. He suffered abuse and cruelty from passing humans, deteriorating physically and emotionally. Over time, things out of his control began to shape Gus, his life, and his future.

Gus was found by local rescuers in September 2018. He was in horrific condition, so he was immediately taken for medical treatment sponsored by the Houston K-911 Rescue group. Gus had many medical issues to overcome, he had a long recovery with lots of support from people all over the world, but now he is happy and healthy. Gus has a forever family now and he is loved, pampered and cherished, as every dog should be.

Author Sandee Roquemore-Maxwell has worked with rescue dogs in the Houston area for many years. She understands that the key to a better future for animals is to teach the next generation to have compassion for those left in their care. The story of Gus reminds kids how to love their pets, and what to do if they see one abandoned, while instilling respect for animals everywhere.

I had gotten this book for my 6 yr old daughter thinking she would enjoy the story. I was sooooo wrong!! Not only did she enjoy the gripping story of hearing Gus' tale of rescue, but I found myself very enthralled in the story as well. Not only was it an easy read for her to understand but it also helped both of us gain insight to the importance of how dogs, cats, and many other a myriad of homeless and abandoned pets need everyone's help to survive and live happy lives. This has certainly opened our eyes to the bigger issue of making sure owners know to take care of their pets. Not only by keeping them safe and never abandoning them but making sure annual vet visits are done, getting them spade or neutered, and keeping them properly vaccinated against the plethora of illnesses they can contract. Thank you to the author for bringing this important matter to the public in a way even children can understand.

The Life of Gus is a precious little book with a heartwarming story that every child will enjoy So much to be learned from Gus' story. This book tells his story with love and compassion for animals, especially the precious dogs who have been neglected and abandoned and are now on the streets. The ending (or the new beginning for Gus) is uplifting and happy ... one that every child and parent will love.

Great book for children of all ages. It teaches the importance of taking care of all animals in a loving, caring home. This book brings to light the plight of so many homeless dogs and cats. We need to do a better job of spaying or neutering pets. I can't wait to read more books like this!
