Sweet innocent brilliant little Penny left alone at home while her daddy gambles the nights and days away. Drawn to a light in the night she finds a wild boy by the lake. Offering shelter for protection friendship grows, but wheels are in motion that can't be stopped. Danger is closing in. Can they be saved? This is the begining, before The End Game Trilogy series, where Damon and Penny first meet. It is also included in The King which is the first part of their story that intertwines with The End Game book The Castle. A truely twisted tale that will draw you in and keep you tied up in knots wanting to know how things will end. It will pull at you until the comclusion of The Queen. I recommend reading this first, then The End Game Trilogy The Pawn, The Knight, The Castle, before going back to the Masterpiece Duet The King and finally The Queen which will release Sept2017.

Only 43 pages. Is a prequel but seems like a good book which continues with The King.

This is a short story introducing us to Penny and Damon way before the events of the Endgame trilogy and, oh my, what a great introduction. We meet them at a young age, learn a little bit about their background and what is shaping them as a way of prologue for the upcoming story, The King. Once again, I've been enraptured by Ms. Warren's words. I totally love the glimpses we get of the characters personalities, their reasons to behave a certain way and can honestly say the seed has been planted for me to want to know a lot more about them. I can't wait to read more about Damon's story and his relationship with Penny.

Definitely not your happy ever after kind of story but the characters grab your interest and keep it to the last page. They both have a strong sense of survival mixed with a gritty sort of integrity and compassion that comes from being forced to deal with life's hard knocks when they should have been in front of the TV in thier pj's eating cereal without a care in the world.

Great Prequel!! Young math prodigy, Penny, desperately trying to survive despite the fact that her mother is dead and her father is gambler, who disappears for days at a time, meets young Damon Scott, who is determined not to turn out like his father. Damon makes the ultimate sacrifice for Penny and their circumstances brings them back together again after several years.

This was a good short story & has made me look forward to more about Penny. Penny has it tough as a kid, loses a parent & has a lackluster one take it's place. While she is 7 years old and her only surviving parent is on a 2 week bender she meets Damon. Events transpire and Damon leaves and doesn't come back. She was sad and guilty about what happened for some time. The story ends when she is 15 and things are mostly better until Damon reappears. Give it a try ... now on to the next book!

Very intriguing prequel. Makes me curious enough to want to read the next book. Though, the ending of this one is a bit ominous.
