I did read it all of the way through, although I put it down so many times and the procrastinated for days on picking it back up. The history in the first half of the book was well done, but then that is well documented. The book is morose and maudlin and the plot moves like slogging through knee high mud, add that to underdeveloped characters who can only express their feelings for each other repetitively. Not much else is provided to help form the characters of Dimitri and Tatiana. When Dimitri reaches Berlin, the book takes a decided turn in both tone and style; it is almost as though two books were pieced together to form one whole. Note to author: 1- Get an editor. If you already have one, fire them and get a new more experienced one. There are way too many typos throughout the book that an experienced editor would/should have corrected. 2- When Dimitri is in Prague in 1947, he claims that he can make a phone call the next morning to let his sister know that he will be delayed. In 1947 following the war, Prague had no gas, electric, or phone service. Later, when Dimitri is at his sister’s house in a remote town in Czechoslovakia the story tells us that he made two phone calls to Rosa in Albany, NY to tell her of his delayed arrival. Hard to make transatlantic phone calls without phone service! 3- In 1968, we are told that Dimitri had two Xerox copies made of his manuscript. That was impossible to do unless you went to a private company that had a Xerox copier and I am sure that was not available to a recluse in upstate NY. There were no Office Supply stores in those days and most companies were still converting from mimeographs.
