Overview

My Chemical Romance's 2002 debut was a particularly strident entry in that shifty genre of bands tortuously slamming together elements of emo, hardcore, and even metal. Rightly signed to a larger label (in this case, Reprise Records), MCR has returned in 2004 with Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge. With the aid of production major-leaguer Howard Benson, they've edited the slight rookie excesses of I Brought You My Bullets You Brought Me Your Love, resulting in a rewarding, pretty damn relentless product. Ghosts wander through this Sweet Revenge, and the blood-stained lovers of its cover are no joke. "Would I die for you? Well here's your answer in spades...Got you in my sights," Gerard Way wails in "Hang 'Em High." There's also cinematic concepting here -- "The story of a man. A woman. And the corpses of a thousand evil men..." the liners intone. "You Know What They Do to Guys Like Us in Prison" begins "In the middle of a gunfight/In the center of a restaurant." Musically the cut's claustrophobic, messy, and juiced with adrenaline, just like the Tokyo crime caper shootout it was probably inspired by. Picture antiheroes leaping sideways with twin pistols blaring -- in slow motion, you know -- and you're close. Put an old At the Drive-In record on in the background, and suddenly you're shot in the arm and down to your last clip. Economic, treble-kicking production, consistently hyper, "Let's get to the next note NOW!" instrumentation, and great thematic songwriting -- Three Cheers teems with the influences MCR shares with its peers, but recent efforts from fellow travelers Thursday and A.F.I. don't have this furious immediacy, this coarseness that's so appealing. My Chemical Romance seems to have built-in restrictive bindings that prevent it from flying off the handle into quiet-loud screamo stereotyping or odd-bird stopovers into choral parts or maudlin piano. Something like "Ghost of You" might slow the pace, but it doesn't touch the railing guitars or inventively explosive drumming. Album highlights include the propulsive chain shots "Give 'Em Hell Kid" and "To the End," where layers of vocals increase urgency over modernist post-punk, or the raucous "Thank You for the Venom." There's no question of Reprise's high hopes for My Chemical Romance and Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge. But its accessibility pays tribute to anger and bullet holes in black leather.

This is my favorite album of all time. The first song I heard from My Chemical Romance was "I'm Not Okay (I Promise)" and I have to admit, I wasn't hooked until I heard "I Never Told You What I Do For A Living." It took two songs for me to be in love with this band. Every song on this cd sounds different than the last, and the emotion in each song is beautiful. There are no pointless songs on this cd, or songs that other bands have already done. 1. Helena- Has to be MCR's signature song. It is beautiful. Every aspect of this song, the guitars, vocals, drums, everything is perfectly planned. And the song has an amazing meaning. 2. Give 'Em Hell, Kid- Great song to get me pumped. Has another important message behind it, and I love the way Gerard's vocals sound in the first verse, as well as the verse after the chorus. 3. To The End- I remember the first time I heard this song, I couldn't stop listening to it and had it on repeat for such a loooong time. I love how this song tells a story and the guitars in this song is <3 4. You Know What They Do To Guys Like Us in Prison- This song has to have the most controversial meaning behind it, but its amazing. The lyrics are very powerful, and Bert McCracken's guest vocals are great. I love the guitar solo druing the bridge, gotta be my favorite solo. The sound reminds me of fire. 5. I'm Not Okay (I Promise)- Great, brutal(haha), and very fast-paced song. A favorite to hear at MCR shows :D 6. The Ghost of You- Simply beautiful. Made me cry many many times. The lyrics are very moving, and the guitars in this song is beautiful. Very moving. 7. The Jetset Life is Gonna Kill You- This one is not as fast-paced and loud as the others, but just as great. There are so many great moments in this song that create a beautiful piece. 8. Interlude- Wonderful break 9. Thank You For the Venom- AMAZING, makes me wanna mosh haha. Great to sing along with and gets me pumped. 10. Hang 'Em High- Lovely, i love this song's energy and the lyrics are soo chiliing, in a good way. 11. It's Not A Fashion Statement, It's A F***ing Deathwish- Great when I'm angry, but also amazing when I'm happy. 12. Cemetery Drive- This is a song with a beautiful yet sad meaning behind. I love the extra vocals behind the words Gerard is singing. Creates a beautiful layer underneath what is first heard. 13. I Never Told You What I Do For A Living- My favorite song in the whole world. It fits with the concept of the album, telling the ending of the story. Gerard's vocals are amazing, the clean, and the screaming parts. Both guitars carry beautiful tunes throughout the entire song, the bass keeps a great pace, and the drums are perfect. No other song compares to this one.

I picked up this cd after the first time I heard "Helena," and I've been obsessed with it ever since. "Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge" has an amazing range of music style, from haunting songs such as "Ghost of You" to more hardcore songs like "Im Not Okay." Besides the hits played on the radio, MCR created many other great songs, like "You Know What They Do To Guys Like Us In Prison" and "Its Not a Fashion Statement, Its a Deathwish." MCR has also created music videoes for three of their best songs, which I would really recommend you see. Theyre incredibly unique, and quickly became my favorite videos.

I LOVE MCR!!!!! my friend told me about them, and i saw the video for "i'm not okay (i promise)" on mtv2, and fell in love with them!!!!! (plus the lead singer is hot, not that it matters) all the cds i have i like a few of the songs, but i could listen to this entire album a million times and not get sick of it. you hear alot of songs these days that try to express what some horrors people go through, but only mcr can actually make you say "I know exactly what you mean!" (i.e. in the song "cemetery drive" he says, "singing songs that make you want to slit your wrists. it isn't that much fun.", who doesn't do that when they're depressed?)and here's a tip; even though it's an excellent song, don't listen to "helena" when your depressed; it'll only make you more so. all the songs are amazing, but here are a few that should get these guys into the rock 'n' roll hall of fame in a few years: "Helena", "To the End", "I'm Not Okay (I Promise)", "Give 'Em Hell Kid", "You Know What They Do To Guys Like Us In Prison"

I love this album. It reminds me a lot of rebellion and frustration, especially in I'm Not OK(I promise) witch really works because the album is basically all about that I'm Not OK(i promise) is about Gerard's feelings on high school, and paints a picture in ones mind as rising up and rebelling on the people who were total a$$holes in your past(Especially in the music video). In Thank You For The Venom, it's talking about Gerard's frustration with missionaries who just won't leave you alone(it also sounds kinda like a suicide-type thing in the chorus when it says "so give me all your poison, and give me all your pills, and give me all your hopeless hearts and make me ill"). To me, every song is like a movie describing and combining Gerard's complaints, rebellions, and downright frustrations. This album is a masterpeice.

This was the very first MCR cd that i bought and It's probably my favorite too. I love all the songs on here. But some of my favorite are Helena, Give 'em Hell Kid, and of course, the ever popular I'm Not Ok (I Promise) I love how their feelings shine through the lyrics. And these are all songs that someone can relate to one way or another. I totally recommend this cd for anyone who likes punk rock music.

This is the album that started it all for me. it got me to fall in love with the alternative "scene" and gave me my first band to believe in. The album weaves an intricate, beautiful story of lost love and revenge that uses Gerard Way's deeply personal lyrics to narrate. The musicianship and unity of it makes you see why MCR has such a deep fan base. It's absolutely awesome.

This wonderfull music was created by Gerald Way (singer), Micky Way (bass), Frank Iero (guitar), Ray Toro (guitar), and Matt Felissier (drums). I had herd them live and they play there music a lot harder live (meaning more scream-singing) there very punky angry type music drew me in and i loved the sound. the main song that i got hooked on wich made me buy the cd was "I'm not ok (i promis)" it my be the best song but the rest of the songs come close to its greatness. its lyrics are a little sappy and some are a cry for help which i'm sure a lot of teens can relate to which could be a reason for its popularaty.

If none of you are into the &quot bubblegum punk&quot sound of My Chemical Romance's 2006 release of &quot The Black Parade&quot and their debut album &quot I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love&quot , this is just the one. It's just very epic, especially the very emotional lyrics of &quot Helena&quot . Those kind of lyrics will just blow you away.

These guys are the best band ever, and it's not an opinion, it's a fact. They're the guys keeping rock alive, and to those of you who disagree, well you don't know what you're missing. The lyrics are fresh, new, and they're good for almost any type of occasion. Don't miss out on this amazing band and all their other CD's. DON'T GET LEFT BEHIND!! GET THE CD!! TRUST ME, IT'S WORTH IT!

Being called an 'emo' band, My Chemical Romance is sometimes shunned by hard rockers. But not me. In the newly released CD "Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge" I feel that all of the deep feelings Gerard and the gang are expressed in their music. And their songs are very truthful. And sometimes, the truth hurts.
