With proceeds benefiting UNICEF programs for children in Latin America, there's one good reason to pick up this three-disc set. There are 36 more. Featuring artists the caliber of Buena Vista Social Clubber Compay Segundo, Peruvian diva Eva Ayllón, Brazil's bossa star Joyce, Mexican balladeer Armando Manzanero, and many others, this tribute set really is a testament to the glory of Latin American song. Producer Dave Grusin has selected not only top-notch artists, but wonderful material as well. Full of surprises, the discs cover the vast continent and surrounding islands, drawing upon Cuban classics (Segundo's hit "Chan Chan"), cumbia ("La Pollera Colorá"), Afro-Peruvian rhythms ("El Alcatraz," in a fiery rendition by Ayllón), bolero ("No Se Tú"), and Latin jazz (Béla Fleck, Alex Acuña, and Paquito D'Rivera take care of that). Exciting contemporary sounds from Brazilian samba-rockers Pedro Luis a Parede and members of Los Van Van and Adalberto Alvarez's band complete the package.
