Overview

For both Zane and Darby, their small town roots hold a terrible secret. Now, decades later, they've come together to build a new life. But will the past set them free or pull them under?

Zane Bigelow grew up in a beautiful, perfectly kept house in North Carolina’s Blue Ridge Mountains. Strangers and even Zane’s own aunt across the lake see his parents as a successful surgeon and his stylish wife, making appearances at their children’s ballet recitals and baseball games. Only Zane and his sister know the truth, until one brutal night finally reveals cracks in the facade, and Zane escapes for college without a thought of looking back...

Years later, Zane returns to his hometown determined to reconnect with the place and people that mean so much to him, despite the painful memories. As he resumes life in the colorful town, he meets a gifted landscape artist named Darby, who is on the run from ghosts of her own.

Together they will have to teach each other what it means to face the past, and stand up for the ones they love.

Love, Love, Love Nora Roberts! Always wait with anticipation for one of her books and I can honestly say this is the first time I've ever felt let down by one of her books. At first I was going to give this only 2 stars due to my disappointment, but I did have to acknowledge that it is extremely well written, engages the reader's emotions and is a good story. The first part of the story is amazing and exactly what I expect from Roberts, even though I knew that Zane survives due the the basic book description, her story telling had me on the edge of my seat anxious to hear what came next. My disappointment is with what comes after the main character has reached adulthood. The first half of the books seems to be building up the villains in the story and for their comeback and confrontations, but when they happen they are completely anti-climatic, poorly executed on the villains part and lack luster for the reader emotionally. Additionally, in regards to Zane and Darby, I didn't really feel all that emotionally invested in their relationship, them falling in love was almost like an after thought by the author to me. The way Darby interacted and reached out to all those around her was much more interesting, but at the same time the reader doesn't really get an insight into her inner thoughts and emotions unless she's dealing with the fallout from the confrontation with the villains. In regards to Zane, childhood vs. adulthood, while the characterization remains true throughout; in the first half of the book the reader feels as if they are there with him as he struggles, but in the second half of the book it's like we are watching what is happening at a distance.

Oh nora roberts how l love your books and have read every single one. I loved this one set in NC my home for nearly 50 years and i am proud of my roots. I wish you had not made reference to the rebel flag in the way you did because its history. And dont get me started on gun bumper sticker. This was still a good book tho very predictable.

This was a good story, but where did the 'romance go? That is what sets Nora Roberts apart for me. I read her for the fantastic scene and character development AND the romance. She just skipped over that here. It was not worth the $16.

No one weaves a story better than Nora Roberts. This is one of the best books she has written yet. A strong female character meets the true man of her dreams. They both come from troubled pasts and did not allow it to set the course of their lives. Highly recommend!
