War Baby is a riveting personal account of growing up in the Second World War in a small hamlet in East Sussex when the peaceful existence of a young boy is suddenly broken by night time raids, dog fights in the sky and preparations for war. The author's story deals with the horror of crouching in a dug out shelter listening as bombers drone overhead, to his evacuation to a remote hamlet in the Welsh mountains, to being blown off a hayrick by an exploding doodlebug near the end of the war.

The book covers the years 1938-1962 and describes his close family life in post-war Britain and the author's problematic education and turbulent adolescence as he successfully struggles to overcome his dyslexia and succeeds in gaining the qualifications and experience to become a College Lecturer. Mike Strange has an infectious sense of humour, together with an acute understanding of the strength and frailty of human relationships. His memoir will make you laugh and cry at the same time.

About the Author

Mike Strange graduated from London University in 1960 and studied for an MSc in Politics and Sociology at Birkbeck College in 1976. He grew up in a little hamlet called Pound Green in East Sussex and later lived at a house on the edge of Ashdown Forest in Herons Ghyll. Mike has taught for most of his life in Schools and Colleges of Further Education. In the late 1970s he spent some time as a single parent and now lives with his second wife, Lisbeth, at the centre of a large reconstituted family, comprising five children and five grandchildren.

Apart from writing, Mike has built a large workshop and pottery studio at the bottom of the garden, where he and his wife make ceramics to sell at their annual Christmas Sale at their home and at a variety of art festivals and galleries. Mike also enjoys swimming, camping and walking with friends, and still makes the occasional Meccano model - a continuation of a childhood hobby referred to in this book.
