Wolf Eyes: A Retrospective

Wolf Eyes: A Retrospective

This compilation culled from the first decade of work from Winter's Living Music Label, is the logical summation of impressive work from a new age pioneer. Long a champion of greater awareness of the plight of the Earth and her diverse inhabitants, Winter (who plays soprano sax) began utilizing the sounds of animals in his recordings back in 1978 with COMMON GROUND. Though not the first to weave animal calls and "voices" into music, Winter and his Consort pioneered the art of using their sounds and melodies as true musical compositions. Several tracks on WOLF EYES beautifully meld these vocalizations into melodic content. "Love Swim" is particularly moving with its use of bottlenose dolphin sounds. Winter's groundbreaking efforts are evident here in other ways. His work included vocals, which are not always popular on New Age albums; he recorded live in unusual surroundings (the Grand Canyon, St. John the Divine Cathedral, and the UN); and he made peace overtures to our Russian friends by recording with the Dimitri Pokrovsky Singers. Though the members of the Consort have changed over the years, one will always hear a sense of "intentional community." On WOLF EYES, as in most of Winter's music, you will find the beauty, courage, fragility, power, and weakness of life on planet Earth.
