This set for middle-schoolers in Gale's UXL line seems to be modeled on its "Historic World Leaders" ["RBB" Jl 94], also edited by Commire. That set has biographies for 620 leaders in five volumes; this set covers 120 people in three volumes ("Africa & Asia", "Europe", and "North & South America"). The people selected seem to be a good cross-section of cultures and time periods. The entries include black-and-white portraits and other illustrations, quotations by or about the leader, birth and death dates, and a three- to five-page biography written for this age group. The chronology of events in the leader's life and the sources for further reading from "Historic World Leaders" have been dropped. The volumes are sequentially paginated, with a cumulative index in each volume. The volumes are not numbered, so students may have to look at all three to find the biography they are looking for. The same index of leaders by country and a time line appear in all three volumes
This wide-ranging collection of biographies will be useful in middle school and public libraries.
