About the Author

Madeleine L'Engle (1918–2007) was born in New York City and attended Smith College. She wrote more than 60 books, the most famous of which is A Wrinkle In Time (1962), winner of the Newbery Award in 1963. L'Engle continued the story of the Murry family from A Wrinkle In Time with seven other novels (five of which are available as A Wrinkle In Time Quintent from Square Fish). She also wrote the famous series featuring the Austin family, beginning with the novel Meet The Austins (1960). L'Engle revisited the Austins four more times over the next three decades, concluding with Troubling a Star in 1994. The story of the Austins had some autobiographical elements, mirroring Madeleine's life and the life of her family. Madeleine L'Engle's last book, The Joys of Love, is a romantic, coming-of-age story she wrote back in the 1940s, that was recently published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux.

A Wrinkle In Time was my FAVORITE book when I was a child! I read it and kept checking it out of the library and re-read it so many times that finally the librarian told me that I had to start reading something else. I would recommend this book to any child that loves science and adventure and the unexpored~

Madeleine L'engle's five book series proves to be worth the read! Unlike many young adult books, and although an easy read, the plot line of L'engle's books reveal enough complexity to keep an audience of any age interested. With so many books of this genre that copy the same character type and plot line, these books are refreshing in that, in this case, all are original and prove intriguing. Book I introduces characters with special abilities to communicate with others without speaking as well as with those who do not speak their language. The characters must go on a dangerous mission to save a missing father who is rumored to have abandoned his family. Book II drags a bit, but is worth reading. Meg must save her brother who is dying from a strange illness. Book III continues the adventures of the same characters but adds a new character, and along with her, a new intrigue, the idea of the power of runes. In this book, it once again falls to Charles Wallace to save the world. Book IV, my personal favorite, is a retelling of the story of Noah and the flood, with a focus on the twins, Dennys and Sandy. Book V, also drags a bit, but again, it is worth reading. The setting of this book takes place at a much later time than the other books, and it's main character, Polly, is Meg's daughter. In this book, Meg must help save a young man with heart trouble (both literal and symbolic) and make peace in a world that existed 3,000 years before her time. While the book addresses the ideas of druids, L'engle doesn't delve into the culture enough to teach the audience anything new.

I thought this would be a good buy, so I looked at the description - nope! These are great books, but I'm definetly not getting this copy until it gets the basic summary of the book correct! Many Waters, for example, does not concern a war-torn oasis, amd Meg isn't even a main character. In fact, she is only mentioned about two or three times in passing... I don't want to add any more spoilers, but really, book publishers, can't you actually read the book before coming up with some absurd and random synopsis that doesn't help people at all?

A wrinkle in time is a very cool book to read and is a major thriller. The characters are very unique and creative and the plot is very exciting too. There are no illustrations but the cover tells you all about the adventure and thrills and the things the characters face. It may be fiction but it teaches you about love and how to care about your family. This is a really good book, but it is kind of challenging and it is a little inappropriate for seven and below.

Rewriting the review, since the system just ate the previous copy. This is one of my favorite series from my childhood, and perhaps some of the first "grown up" books that I read. They're definitely "growing up" stories, but they have a lot of nuance and detail, combined with a beautiful flow that keeps you turning the pages. Definitely a set worth having.

When I read them I felt like I was part of the story. If you enjoy fantasy stories, you will think these are very interesting. When I finished one I couldn't wait to read the next. The author was very creative in her writing. Things happen that you never would have expected. You never know what will happen next. It fills you with curiosity. The characters are fascinating. What I love most about the books is that they take you out of the real world. These books are enjoyable for all ages. A MUST read! I loved them and you will too!

I first read A Wrinkle In Time when I was in 5th grade. I loved it and wanted to read more. Over time I bought the whole series. They are a timeless classic. It's been 16 years since I first read the book and to this day I still enjoy reading them. I re-read the series at least once a year. This series is really something that we should be promoting to our kids.
